The Lions Club gathered at the Hotel Mount Dora with 100 percent attendance. No business was transacted beyond routine matters, and members were urged to attend the next meeting as Lions International’s letter is expected.
An official order effective January 5 1943 updates Army Flash message procedures. The Army Operator will not repeat messages unless misunderstood, and then only parts as called for. The Flash Message Form section 2 omits the word motor.
Poe S. Herden is appointed Assistant Scout Executive for the Central Florida Council serving seven counties. Based at Orlando headquarters, he will assist Scout masters Cubmasters and skippers and guide committees. Formerly Troop 22 Scoutmaster in St Petersburg he comes from the Florida Power Corporation and aims to aid the war effort through professional Scouting.
Production of amateur photographic film is cut by 50 percent from 1941 output, while professional film supply falls 24 percent below the base period.
Lakeside Inn hosted the Mount Dora Woman's Club annual luncheon with over 110 attendees. The New Year featured the official opening of a reconditioned putting green and plans for the Lakeside Inn Championship in the second week of January. Regular putting teas begin after January 15. A bridge party last Saturday honored Mr. and Mrs. George C. Hutchinson who won both first prizes, defense stamps. A Sunday evening concert featured noted artists including Jo hanna Van den Burg and Beatrice Reed. Several guests arrived from Leesburg and beyond, with locals and visitors enjoying the event and birds observed by Lakeside’s resident ornithologist Mrs. Louis G. L. Myers.
Dr and Mrs James Austin Richards will be at the Community Church parsonage Friday January 8 from 3 to 6 PM to greet parish members. The informal tea, postponed from New Year’s afternoon, invites friends to drop in for a social visit.
Despite gasoline rationing and tire shortages, the Lake County Country Club remains open. Golfers find the remodeled course in fine playable condition and luncheons available in the clubhouse. P. W. Hicks serves as president with S. D. Strong as greens committee chairman.
The A C Quixley Realty Company reports the sale of three small tracts near Montverde to Mount Dora buyers. Purchasers include G D Smith of Ferndale, Geo T Walton of Montverde, and Mrs Margaret Fosgate of Winter Garden. Walton and Fosgate tracts will be citrus set.

Lake County Schools at War will report activities at two public meetings Friday January 15 in Leesburg High School auditorium. An inter club supper from 6 to 7 30 p m will precede a 7 30 program with exhibits and war bonds on display. Prominent speakers include Colin English John Fahs Karl Lehmann and Miss Patsy Blanton who will receive a $100 bond.
Mr Barker will run First Aid refresher courses as registrations meet the requirement. Anyone wishing to enter the class should sign up. A Red Cross pin was found outside the Community Building and may be claimed at the Defense Room by identifying the pin.
The ladies of the Methodist church will host a cafeteria supper tomorrow Friday at 6 p m in the Community Building. Patrons are encouraged to attend and support the event.
The M. D. H. S. 1948 basketball schedule lists games from December 28 to March 2 with opponents such as Alumni, Tavares, Umatilla, Leesburg, Eustis, Apopka, Ocoee, Winter Garden and St. Class Play. All games start at 7 30 P M. The page notes a school program item and tax included in some lines.
A Red Cross sponsored nutrition class begins tomorrow in Mount Dora at the Community Building. Instructor will be Mrs. Lucie K. Miller, Lake County Home Demonstration Agent. Sessions run Fridays 2 to 4 PM, with a follow on canteen training course.
Co. B held a successful field day on Sunday January 2 near Wolf Branch under Major Dave Wiley and Lt Harvey Kimball with Mr W M Ford acting as umpire. The program included scouting patrolling shotgun and submachine gun practice and tactical drills for about 30 enlisted personnel. A mess by Cook Stafford Story and assistants followed. All January drills will be in Eustis with ongoing recruit intake and basic training for 18 and 19 year olds to gain an advantage in service.
The War Department announces a railroad bridge over Dead River between Lake Eustis and Lake Harris may stay closed to navigation from 8 p.m. to 1 p.m. the next day. In the afternoon and early evening from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., the bridge will be opened on minutes notice.
Last week the Kiwanis Club held its annual meeting with no program beyond a review of the year by George White. He summarized the club’s accomplishments and highlighted each committee’s work. Fletcher Crane won the attendance prize. J. Edwin Baker of Umatilla will install the 1943 officers as past governor of the Florida District Kiwanis. An honor roll for December lists many Kiwanis members including Quixley, Crane, Engelhard, and White.
The junior class presents a three act farce titled Good Night Ladies at the Community Building on January 15 at 8:00. Cast includes Helen Raleigh Dorothy Geiger Jane Raleigh Sam Raleigh Jug Brown Profersexter John Coffin Allene Moon Angela Rimini Mary Robertson Robert Jackson Grace Lee Gladys Irene Crane Earl Griggs etc.
The Community Church will hold its dinner and annual meeting on Wednesday January 13 after postponement from January 6. Last night nine members joined, with one full member and eighteen associate members, who retain home church ties but participate in Church affairs during temporary Mount Dora residence.
A large number of Mount Dora residents purchased 1943 automobile license tags Tuesday. Courtesy of county tax collector Mrs. Pearl Cullen, a tag agent was at the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce to serve locals so they need not travel to Tavares. The agent will return Thursday evening from 5 to 9 at the Chamber of Commerce office, Fifth Avenue, to assist workers and others who have not yet obtained tags.
The Green Lantern Barbecue at Highland and Fifth passes from Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Williams to Mr. and Mrs. Frank McCarty. The McCartys, who ran the place for years, had a health break but now resume operation and invite friends to dine.
Every few weeks the Topic publishes a Digest of War Regulations compiled by the State Defense Council of Florida. This is amended to stay up to date and readers are advised to clip the new edition and discard earlier ones for reference.
Orville R. Brown son of Mrs Della Taylor Mount Dora has finished the Army Air Forces Technical Training School program at Amarillo Texas. He earned a qualification for airplane maintenance and will be sent to an air base to help keep aircraft aloft for Allied victory.
Corp William Turrentine, now at the Army Air Forces School of Applied Tactics in Orlando, promoted to sergeant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Turrentine, Mount Dora High School graduate, later Stetson University attendee. Two Wiley brothers, William B. Wiley at Camp Sheldon Mississippi and Edward Wiley in Texas, added to local honor roll.
Ensign Frederick Sleight sends Christmas wishes from the U S Naval Operating Base in Trinidad, describing tropical scenery near Mount Dora and joking about monkeys instead of reindeer. He notes the different season and hopes to see friends in Mount Dora and Tobaga, praising the U S A.
Florida driver license seekers will take exams Mondays and Thursdays. An examiner from the State Road Patrol will be at the Court House in Tavares at 4 p.m. Each exam day is announced by L. R. Marchinton. Applicants should present at the County Judge A. S. Here Jr. second floor of the courthouse.
