Florida Historical Society Holds Fortieth Annual Meeting in St Augustine

Leesburg Man Attends Civilian Defense School

R L Stevens of Leesburg and Lee Supply and Fire vision of the Lake County Selene Council was chosen to attend the Civilian Defense School at Texas A and M College Houston. The course, run by the Chemical Warfare Service and coordinated by state and local officials, covers organization duties training and operation of the Citizens Defense Corps. Stevens left February 20 as one of Florida’s enrollees with leave granted by Leesburg’s mayor and city council.

The Lake County Chamber of Commerce reported 1,240 memberships as of Saturday noon, surpassing Orange County Chamber's 1,225 memberships in its 1942 campaign. Lake County remains the largest chamber of commerce in Florida.

Federal funds covering half the cost for rebuilding Highway 2 between Plymouth and Mount Dora have been allocated. Orange County Commissioners ordered bids for removing structures within the right of way, with bids to be opened in two weeks.

A large group of Mount Dora Air Raid Wardens gathered Monday at the Defense Center for their first lesson in the Red Cross First Aid Course. The class, led by Wm. J. Barker, includes 32 men from Lake County with instruction also extended to wardens from surrounding areas.

Lions Club Meeting Sees Attendance Drop in Mount Dora

Inclement weather and other National Defense projects kept Mount Dora Lions Club attendance under fifty percent for the first time in months. Lion President Ray Peters of Wallonia Lions Club greeted the local group, with transfers approved for J. O. Hall and L. C. Douglas to new Lions clubs in Tallahassee and Leesburg. The club scheduled a group service at the First Methodist Church with Reverend Kenneth G. Rogers on Sunday morning, March 8, 1942.

Lawn Bowling Club in St Petersburg Reports Growth and Plans

The St Petersburg Lawn Bowling Club notes illness disrupted a tie playoff for second place in the husband and wife tournament. A women's committee was formed by two club members. The 1940 41 annual report cites 331 members, ten committees, a 28 page pamphlet, 1900 donated library volumes, and active club service. A Florida statewide tournament is set for March 2 at Orlando. The Florida State Lawn Bowling League meets March 3 in Orlando. Mount Dora Joins Washington's Birthday Parade at Eustis

Mount Dora participated in the Washington's Birthday celebration in Eustis with a large crowd despite rain. The event featured a long parade with the Eustis Umatilla and Mount Dora bands, American Legionnaires, Florida Defense Force units, Scouts, and floats. Dr. Gilbert S Osincup of Orlando spoke on health and housing council goals. Mount Dora Scouts demonstrated first aid in blackouts and a smoke incident drill. Mr and Mrs John P Kuhl of Butler New Jersey returned home after a stay at Hotel Mount Dora. Dr Kuhl came for the Mount Dora Topic and Chamber of Commerce efforts and praised the lakes and attractions. He caught an 11 pound bass and the Ku hls were hosted by Dr S C Colley visiting the Lake County Medical Center at Eustis and other sites.
