Lt. Tommy Shipes Receives Permanent Citation for Ocean War Action

Lt. (jg) Shipes son of Mr and Mrs G Shipes Mount Dora earned a permanent citation for his Gold Star in lieu of the Second Air Medal while with Composite Squadron 8 on USS Nehenta Bay during operations at Okinawa June 2 1945. He helped plan and execute unscheduled strikes, braved 300 foot runs under heavy anti aircraft fire, aided in destroying buildings closing an enemy cave and damaging troop and supply concentrations before returning to duty in the United States Naval Service.

Yacht Club Notes Highlight Social Week Activities

Yacht Club saw numerous parties and social gatherings as members enjoyed Steward Turner’s offerings. A lovely Tuesday evening party honored guests Mrs Joe Those and Mrs J Thompson with a cocktail before a fine dinner. Committee events included Mount Dora Golf Club annual meeting and Valentine’s Day dessert bridge in the Club lounge with prize winners named.

Community Club Concert Delights Mount Dora Audience

The Community Club presented a fine Tuesday concert in Mount Dora to broad praise. Artists Alphonse Carlo and Katherine Carlo performed works by Handel Brahms Chopin and Kreisler with Carlo using a 1658 Amati violin. The Stetson University Glee Club is set to perform next. Ticket sellers must report results to the Chamber of Commerce this week.

Gayle Redditt Re-enlists After Navy Service

William Gayle Redditt re-enlists in the U S Coast Guard after four years six months and four days in the Navy. He served in every theatre of operations in the late war and participated in four major battles. He was sworn in Wednesday at Tampa.

March of Dimes Collections Report From Mount Dora

The March of Dimes raised funds totaling 253.72 with contributions from Mount Dora Public Schools, Woman's Club, Kiwanis, OK Barber Shop, Story Bros. Grocery, Mount Dora Hardware, Clark's Sandwich Shop, Grand Leader, Piggly Wiggly and First National Bank among others. Donations ranged widely from 439 at the A and P to 35 cents, with several individuals including a newsboy and a hardworking woman giving coins in the Topic box.

A new ten pound stamp becomes valid April 1 and will be planned to meet needs with no extra canning stamps this year. National Miniature Auto Races at Eustis Preview

National miniature auto races set for February 22 and 23 as part of the Eustis Washington's Birthday Celebration. Races run 9:00 a.m. to noon Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to dark Sunday.
