Citrus Winery At Clermont Grows To Extensive Business
Charles M. Pool of Clermont has built Florida’s only citrus winery and the nation’s only grapefruit winery. In 1939-40 he produced 118000 gallons, planning 250000 this season. His wines come in 50 gallon barrels and 1000 gallon lots under about 20 labels. The process uses sugar and hand handling, ages three years, with 13 percent alcohol and no added alcohol. Pool operates 12 workers seasonally and is adding a 5000 gallon vat capacity as a $20000 plant expansion. He criticizes lack of public interest but sees potential for Florida and citrus growers.
