New automobile tags for 1964 in Lake County go on sale Jan 2. About 45 000 registrations are being mailed for initial sales day. Reed urges bringing last year’s registration or title if not received. Rates rose to 12 50 with 13 month renewals through 1970 and grace periods through spring 1965.

Most applications for naturalization rise in January and February, with about 30 percent of filings occurring then. Agriculture Post Is Again Sought By Doyle Conner

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Doyle Conner announced he would seek re election in 1964 citing a record of modernizing the department and expanding consumer protection. He noted eradication programs for screwworms and the Mediterranean fruit fly and efforts against hog cholera Mexican fruit flies and fire ants. He highlighted equitable farm land taxation and a new marketing division to aid growers while stressing strengthened inspection services and safer foods as part of his tenure. Conner, elected to the Florida House at 21, later served five terms and was speaker in 1955.

City Hall Crash Involves Parked Cars And Shelter

A 1962 Oldsmobile driven by Grace Golding Wells of Overlook Drive slid across Alexander Street into a parked car driven by George Wackwitz on Donnelly Street near the temporary City Hall. The impact pushed Wackwitz’s car onto the curb and into the building steps. no injuries were reported. Wells was charged with failure to have her vehicle under control.

Bible School Names Shirley Arnold As Homecoming Queen

At Christian Home and Bible School in Leesburg the seventh annual homecoming crowned Shirley Arnold of Shelbyville Tennessee 16 as queen. Her court included Lynetta Story Sherilyn Sharp and Eugenia Pullen all seniors. The event featured a chicken supper for about 370 served by the PTA and a varsity game in which Tavares defeated the local Bulldogs 75 57.

At a special city meeting Mayor Jesse D. Willmott led a bid review for two 1964 Chevrolet police cars with trade ins. The council split 4 to 3, approving the Creamon bid over Eustis Motor Co. for a net cost of 3,643.30 plus tax, after a Santa Claus gag provided comic relief.
