Local Red Cross drive shows mixed results with several groups meeting or exceeding goals. Leaders Margaret Lewis Whitcomb and Mrs C B oversee committees in Mount Dora Minneola and Yalaha as counties report varied totals toward a $20,000 target.
Progress on Christmas Seals is noted with names Vernell Shipley Betsy Kramer mentioned among participants as efforts continue.
A church event features Wal as the soloist for a Mount Dora Hi Y program tonight. Orlando Y M C A speaker Mr A H Whit Grandey and other participants are listed in the report.
The M. E. Choir under C M Gudgeon will present a Christmas Cantata with organ and piano. The program features carols, hymns, solos by Harriet Banks and W J Ferris, women's and mixed choirs, and a full choir roster led by Mrs C M Gudgeon and Mrs C M Brown.
The Ohio, Comet, and Poise yachts raced a double triangular course from the club pier on Sunday at 2 45 pm in 15 to 25 mph winds. Poise led first leg times, Poise finished 3 52 41 with five miles in 59 minutes, Ohio and Comet retired as wind faded.
The HI Y Club at the local high school plans its third meeting during Christmas vacation in which former members returning from college will be invited. Dr. A F Poole will speak about citizenship and community engagement.
With no opposition, the entire town ticket was elected on Tuesday as 104 ballots were cast. Re-elected officials include M. W. agers for Town Clerk Tax Collector and Willinson Simpson. Park Commission 5 year term Mrs. Mabel M. Cleray. Park Commission 3 year term Carl S. Graves. Board of Election 1 year term L. F. Jackson. Voters praised the town’s efficient governance.
Bowling members return early and kick off with a four team match where Mount Dora defeated DeLand 67 to 59 last Wednesday. A return game is planned, DeLand favors home turf, and park board thanks praise for reconditioning west rinks and six lanes.
Tonight, Thursday, the second in a series of pene Night Services in the church opens with a Community Sing at 7 15 led by Mr. A P Sidelis followed by a Devotional Service on The Message of Hosea. At 8 00 an entertainment program features Mrs. Marguerite Poetzinger Pierce from Rollins College presenting George W Jones A Christmas Gift That Went A-Beg ging. Attendance expected. come early for seating.
Friday evening at 5:30 the Methodist Ladies Aid Society will serve a turkey dinner in the Community Building. Tickets may be procured from ladies in the church circle or committee, with proceeds benefiting church projects.
Kiwanis notes report this week’s committee reports and set the Christmas meeting for next week with officer installation on the 30th. Last week’s luncheon at Villa Dora Hotel featured Carl Graves speaking on church aid and youth programs amid a call for active Christmas-time support.
George J. White president of the First National Bank of Mount Dora was named a director of the Jacksonville Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. His term begins January 1 1938 and lasts three years. White will remain Mount Dora executive of the local bank and his leadership during the Depression is praised as evidence of sound banking.
The Princess Theatre hosts a charity matinee Saturday December 18 at 10:00. Proceeds benefit King’s Daughters Christmas work and a Community Building Christmas Eve party. Tickets from King’s Daughters circle members or Miss Nancy Stuart or Mrs. George Keller, or pay at the door.
A large Mount Dora delegation attended the Leesburg district meeting Monday evening and heard an address by Supreme Vice Chancellor E. L. Stapp of Miami. Grand Chancellor E. E. McDaniel introduced him. W. J. Ferris reported on district visitations. The evening included a light lunch and community singing. Mount Dora Lodge conferred Esquire on three candidates with more to be initiated next week.
Green's Gas distributors in Lake County announce a new plant at Tavares with two 7000 gallon storage tanks, a Donnelly Sixth showroom, and a Ramsdell family investment to establish operations for years. George B. Ramsdell and son Albert relocate from Ohio, bringing Florida residence plans and a lineup of gas appliances for demonstration.
Mr and Mrs Wm A Page of Toronto occupy the Norris house rented by J G LaDue for the season. Dr Reginald Jones of Toronto and his wife expect to arrive early January. Mr and Mrs Louis Potvin are visiting the Pages.
