March of Dimes Plans Reached In Mount Dora

The 1957 March of Dimes opens January 2 in Mount Dora with the Junior Women’s Club as sponsor. Chairwoman Mrs. James B. Sarin leads the fund drive to aid polio victims and boost research, with early donations already reaching $100 toward a goal higher than last year’s $1,800.

Last Trip Home For Mr. Broughton

Richard S. Broughton 77 died December 4 at Wellfleet after a weeks long illness. He lived in Tangerine for 13 seasons and was buried at Pine Forest cemetery in Mount Dora after a graveside service officiated by Rev. Louis Johnson. He leaves a son Richard and a daughter Mrs. John A Herron plus a brother John C. of Hyannis and sister Mrs. Florence White of Brockton along with five grandchildren. Rehbaum Funeral home handled arrangements.

Church Bazaar Event Draws Residents and Profit

St Edward's Episcopal Church held its first bazaar on Grandview Street drawing many residents for hospitality and trinket shopping. The event realized about $400 in profit and will become an annual affair per Mrs John McCormick auxiliary president.

Annexation votes divide towns as Sylvan Shores rejects

In a tight turnout, Sylvan Shores voted 291 to 51 against extending city limits toward the exclusive subdivision. Mount Dora backed annexation 345 to 175 but both sides must approve. Park board retention passed 323 to 233. City Council seats went to Walker 447 Coleman 376 Prinz 353 with others at 179 and 252. Only 580 of 1415 registered cast ballots. Mayor cited misrepresentation debates over annexation. E. G. Rice led opposition presence at polling.

Mrs Harold D Overhiser of Mount Dora is named state president of the Florida branch of King’s Daughters. Mrs John A Crosswhite of Mount Dora will serve as corresponding secretary. City Half Way On Seal Sale Progress Report

Mount Dora remains a little over half way toward last year’s $2,061 Christmas Seals goal with $1,333 raised so far. Sorrento totals $67 and Lake Jem $137, while the county totals $8,034 for the week. Last year’s overall figure was $13,179.

Berlin-Rimmed With 1 000 Tanks Airman Keller Reports In Berlin

A/2C John H. Keller son of Mr and Mrs Jack Keller of Eighth Ave sent a letter home describing life in Berlin He said the western sector is surrounded by 1 000 Russian tanks and that life is tense and expectant He is a Mount Dora High School and Florida State University graduate who studied Russian and now serves as an interpreter in the Air Force.
