Lake Dora pollution and annexation loom large in Mount Dora race. Arthur Jewell and other contenders urge fixing the sewage system and expanding the city, with plans for Sylvan Shores and Lake Gertrude road routing shaping debate. Park Board hopefuls Tillson and Spencer pledge continued beautification and governance.
A Monday 7:30 p.m. gathering at the Chamber of Commerce will launch a temporary Mount Dora Hospital organization. Robert E. Travers chairs, with aims to form a board, discuss financing up to 700000 dollars, and select a site as locals push for a modern hospital to serve an aging population.
City council grants 7220 yearly pay raises and a 10 biweekly bump for Tax Assessor John Cain. Police receive 3420 of the total, utilities 2091, others share the rest. Mayor gets 25 monthly expense increase. Police Chief Orr gains 65 monthly to match Eustis scale.
At a City Council meeting, Mount Dora was reported to gain another state honor. Fire Chief Harold Larsen, president of the Florida Firemen’s Association, is now vice president of the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association. Utilities Superintendent Harold Overhiser was elected to the post at a recent waterworks conference.
Former Councilman John Bethel sparred with officials over a proposed building code change for Prinz property near Lake Dora. Councilman Bill Prinz withdrew the request and joked about growing worms for a fishing camp, while City Atty. Christoper noted codes must be publicly advertised before passage.
Park Commissioner Win C Sleight urged the City Council to oppose abolishing the Park Board amid a Donnelly Park dispute. He touted a planned recreation area for Mount Dora and displayed slides of beautification plans including zinnias. Sleight warned a successor would need expertise on trees and flowers and cited a damaged tree on Alexander Street as example.
City officials await a State Road Department decision on rerouting Highway 441. In mid November Board Member William Dial promised a two week presentation of new or revised Pinecrest route plans, with Pinecrest residents allowed to sit in. Pinecrest leaders, led by T. H. McKinney and W. J. Godtel, urge a route north of Lake Gertrude to minimize impact and may appeal to the governor if stalled again.
Mount Dora will lose Patrolman Troy Shaw after a year in service as he returns to the theatre business. Chief James Orr says a successor is chosen, Leslie J. Whitcomb of Brookline Massachusetts will start Sunday after 21 years Navy service. The 40 year old officer and his wife plan to reside in Mount Dora this week.

Residents of Mount Dora, Sylvan Shores and Lake Shore add to polls Tuesday for Park Board race, annexation questions, and city eligibility rules. Sylvan Shores residents vote on joining the city while Dorans decide annexation terms.
City resident Howard Simpson owns a home straddling the Mount Dora Sylvan Shores line. He can vote in both districts due to ownership of the divided parcel and pays city taxes on two feet, while the rest lies in Sylvan Shores. He may vote on annexation next Tuesday in both districts.
Mrs Margo Hosford head of the Mount Dora Ground Observer Corps calls for volunteers to staff the city station. With a 12 hour schedule volunteers are asked to commit two hours weekly and may register at the Chamber of Commerce.
