Lawn Bowling Club Notes and New Members Arrive

Sunday Evening Reading At Community Church

A Sunday's reading attracted a good crowd at the Community Church parlors as Mr. Richards presented from The Green Pastures in a series of modern religious literature readings. Next Sunday he plans poems on Abraham Lincoln and Lincoln's soliloquy from John Brown's Body at Stephen Vincent Benet. The session starts at 7 30 and may move indoors for comfort. All are welcome.

Matinees Start Christmas at The Princess Theater

Matinee performances begin on Christmas Day at the Princess Theater and continue through the winter season every afternoon except Mondays. The first showing will start at 3 o clock.

Observer Pins Issued To Qualified Watchers

Chief Observer Brown announces supply of observer pins for all tech staff. Qualified observers may obtain pins by contacting him. Many observers on duty but few planes to observe, so vigilance remains critical even when numbers are low. No unusual reports, but watches are faithfully filled.

Orlando aviator thanks Mount Dora friends for help

Miss Louise Luker of Orlando, an aviation student, thanked George E. Hall and Mount Dora helpers after a crash in the Apopka marsh. She rode to a Duda Farms building, swam a canal, received first aid, and returned to Orlando the same night. Her thanks note recalls the Red Cross blanket loan.

Cancer Control Group Organized In Eustis

A Lake County chapter of the Women's Field Army of the American Society for the Control of Cancer was organized at a meeting in Eustis on Saturday December 4th. State Commander Mrs Malcolm Smith of Tampa spoke as honored guest. The effort is sponsored by national, state, and county federations of Women’s clubs. One Hen Produces Nine Eggs in a Day

E W Phelps of Lake Gertrude brought in nine fully formed eggs from a single hen in one day. The couple noted the hen seemed unusually fat and killed her finding nine full size eggs without shells and several smaller ones, explaining the hen's swollen condition.

Service Men's Club Draws Good Attendance at Mount Dora

Captain Reynolds of Battery B 224th sent volunteers by truck to a Saturday Service Men's Club gathering. Several stayed over, the return truck collected them Sunday evening. Mount Dora is praised as a fine spot. On Wednesday sixteen girls plus two hostesses attended a Winter Garden dance and enjoyed the evening.

Woman's Club Notes December Meeting and Christmas Program

The Woman's Club met in December with a small group viewing Patty Claflin's doll collection and Mrs. Lobeck's creche exhibit. Decorations used poinsettias and Turk's Cap. The treasurer reported a healthy balance. two new members joined and plans for January 5th included a dynamic speaker from the Florida War Finance Committee, Mr. Karl Lehmann. A Christmas program followed with scripture readings, carols, Miss Lewis's kindergarten tale, and a social hour. Dues reminders and arrears were noted for the next meeting.

Grady Lanier Killed On Highway In Lake County

Grady Lanier employed by CitRus Culture Corporation was fatally struck on Highland avenue between the Orange County line and the overpass as he walked with his wife. A driver named Silas Harris, a Black man, is held in Lake County jail at Tavares pending an inquest set to resume after an eye witness returns from Gainesville.

Col C E Lester of Lake County Defense Council announces a test blackout tonight at 9 30 with red signal, 9 45 blue signal, and 10 10 all clear. The 9 30 red means a complete blackout, simulating a surprise air raid. The drill tests rapid mobilization of civilian protection forces. yellow and first blue signals are omitted. Civilian protection forces urged to be alert but not report until the first signal.

The School Band performs at the Community Building on Tuesday evening December 28 at 8 p m with patriotic and Christmas numbers. Lake County men to report for military induction
