A Mount Dora event invites housewives to an afternoon demonstration showing electricity as the economy and cleanliness king of cookery. The program, at the uni Building, aims to persuade beyond current electric ranges with prizes and refreshments for attendees.
A 3000 acre game preserve at Silver Springs is announced to showcase Florida's wild life. Ray and Davidson plan to add deer turkey and other species to recreate early Florida habitats and protect endangered plants and animals along river banks and on islands nearby.
The Mount Dora Tourist Club marked its first meeting of the year at the Community Building with a crowd exceeding capacity. President A C Quixley welcomed attendees as Mayor Simpson praised the club, and a 450 member count was noted. Plans for the Orange Festival Trailer Parade January 18 to 23 were announced.
The Lake County Chamber of Commerce Board will hold its regular monthly meeting at the court house office at 8 p m Friday December 4. President C B Lester urges large land representative attendance as important matters are to be discussed.
The new U S senator plans a conference with Washington officials to seek a fair revision of a reciprocal trade agreement with the Citrus Commission. He aims to safeguard Florida truckers while pushing for equitable terms. He has impressed officials with his tireless, orderly approach since taking office.
Mr. T. J. Potter lies in Lake County Medical Center with a double leg fracture after falling from a packing house roof Monday. He was helped by accident partner Charles Y. TM-I, who sustained a scalp injury and ankle sprain but continued working at the packing house.
On November 24 the local Hi Y group met at a home with discussion led by a member who described plans after school. Candidates shared career interests including electrical engineering forestry metal work aeronautical engineering and archeology and explained how their choices relate to their goals. Orange juice and cookies followed the meeting.
A woman handed her Tourist Club membership card instead of a 25 cent ticket for The Old Peabody Pew at the Community church. The card was given to the club president and can be retrieved if not already returned. Several attendees first went to the Community Building by mistake but soon went to the church and arrived in time for the show.
Members and friends are invited for a boat ride on the City of Dora tomorrow night. The party will depart promptly at 8:00 p.m. from the Yacht Club dock, with a price of 25 cents per person.
December 1 starts the sale of 1937 automobile license tags in Lake County. County tax collector B A Williams urges residents to buy early to ensure timely payments to teachers and to ease clerks’ workload during year end.
The Montverde Nursery owned by Miss A. Shafer employed 15 locals last week to pull and pot 40000 sanseverias and Kalenshoe plants for the Christmas trade. Plants were shipped in novel bowls to department stores nationwide. The same shipper sent azaleas and sanseverias to Illinois, and earlier to New Jersey.
The Dorcas Society of the old Tory Hill meeting house enjoyed a warmly received performance. Florence Gil bert Hanscom directed the stage production with Miss Madeleine Milner as reader and a cast including Helen O. Lemert Elizabeth T. Wentworth and Wayne H. Richardson in the lead. The play featured period costumes and a love story between Dee Wentworth and Justin Peabody as the carpet committee’s event highlighted by Samuel French staging.
H B McFarlane 73 was struck by a car Saturday night near Donnelly at Fifth avenue and is confined to Lake County Medical Center Umatilla with a strained shoulder neck and shock. The accident occurred near the Electric Shoe Shop run by J R Tucker where McFarlane has lived for two years. The driver, a man named W Anderson, a negro, is being held by authorities.
The sixth grade held a Thanksgiving program on Wednesday November 25 1936 with all students participating. After the program, attendees enjoyed ice cream cups and turkey shaped cookies, and Mrs Wood waived homework as a Thanksgiving treat. Mildred Edwards and the class reporters note the event.
The Mount Dora Art League hosts a Christmas program at the Community church on Friday at 8 pm. The event features slides of famous paintings, music records, and carols sung by pupils including Jacqueline Driscoll and Izetta K Copp, with other performers and seasonal pieces.
Mount Dora voters go to the polls Tuesday to elect three town council members and two park commission members. Candidates include Frank Burkart Proctor L. Drugg Tracy M. Kramer and Katherine Kirby for a five year term. J J West will serve one year to complete the late Charles’ term.
Mount Dora High School football team and two coaches were guests at a Kiwanis luncheon. J Carlisle Rogers, Leesburg Lieutenant Governor elect, urged teamwork, self control and character. Also honored was Mrs Evans for the Thanksgiving bonce, and Rev Heber D. Ketcham was elected Kiwanis director.

Internationally famed Ted Shawn and eight male dancers perform at Orlando Municipal Auditorium on Monday night December 7 at 8 30 o'clock. Critics in this country and England praise the program which includes Indian Sinhalese Maori dances and religious works. The company, touring the U S and Canada, recently drew acclaim in London during the George V Jubilee.
Rev. Leslie V. Underwood and his family arrive from Rockwood Tennessee to assume duties at First Baptist Church. The family located on Eleventh Avenue East. He will lead morning and evening services this Sunday.
Dr. Mildred Marsh and Dr. Enrick C. Devorsak spent Friday and Saturday at a podiatrists convention and then traveled to Miami to attend the beauty culture institute and show from Monday to Wednesday this week.
Mount Woman's Club hosted seven Florida Federation of Women's Clubs sections for their 15th annual gathering in the Community Building. About 100 delegates from Orange Osceola Seminole and Sumter counties attended with Mrs James Wilson of Chuluota elected sectional vice president and Mrs J G Kellum of Tallahassee reporting on state activities.
The Church of Christ on Rossiter Street Lake Franklin Park opens its new meeting house with a 10:15 a m march from the Arbor, a 30 minute social, then a service by Evangelist S W Colson of Ocala. Dinner follows in the Arbor, then at 2 pm Evangelist Chas Coleman of Orlando preaches. Public is invited.
Mrs. C. F. Goddard, Lake County TB and Health Association chair, reports receipts of $50.30 from Christmas seals. Seals support year round tuberculosis work and are sold downtown at Miss True's Rest-a-While Gift Shop and at the Topic office.
Public Library announces new fiction acquisitions including White Banners by Lloyd C. Douglas, Whiteoak Harvest by Maze de la Roche, The Kidnap Murder Case by S. S. Devine, A Prayer for My Son by Hugh Wal, The Lost Wagon Trail by Zane, Aunt Lavinia by Joseph Creighton, Heads and Tails by Malvina Hoff, and In Europe by John Gunther.
The ladies of the Methodist church announce their annual bazaar on Tuesday, November 8, with afternoon and evening hours in the church. Sales include useful fancy articles, plants, home made candy, plus a grab bag and fish pond for children. A 35 cent supper will be served starting at six. The ladies invite patronage.
Wylie Gillispie of Tavares was elected for the fourth year as president of the Central Florida Engineers and Surveyors Association at the Orlando meeting on Friday November 20. A. P. Michael of Orlando was chosen secretary. The group includes engineers and surveyors from Lake Orange Seminole and Brevard counties and honors a local citizen with reelection to a high office.
On Friday afternoon December Hanscom will present a missionary play in place of the monthly missionary meeting. Mrs Hanscom is assisted by several ladies in presenting the performance and a tea will follow as a social time.
The sale of Christmas Seals provides funds for the tuberculosis campaign in the United States and in other countries.
The Tourist Club season begins with the first program next Tuesday night in the Auditorium presented by students of Southern College. The season aims to feature student entertainment and community participation.
Lakeland brings the three act comedy to Mount Dora Community Auditorium at 8 p m on December 8 for the Tourist Club. Warren Willis stars as the professor amid a chaotic scene with a dean, mother in law to be and a jailer as a strange woman influences the tale. The cast includes Bill Pollard George Cranantoup Lew Kelly and others in a farce about jail plots and caffeine fueled lectures.
Dr E E Strickland and Mrs Strickland travel to Havana Cuba for the Association of Seaboard Air Line Railway Surgeons annual meeting December 2 to 6. The convention features a grand banquet Saturday night as the highlight of the four day program. They are accompanied by Mr and Mrs T P Strickland of Tallahassee.
A list of students visiting home for the Thanksgiving holiday includes Robert W. Dickson Jr Nelson Ros Buck Sadler Edward Brooks from University of Florida and Jane McCarty Smith Alfred from Stetson University DeLand.
