Plane crashes near Mount Dora injures but rescues pilot

A Navy F 84F Thunderstreak crashed into an orange grove northwest of Lake Gertrude after the pilot reported severe vibration. Mount Dora Ground Observer Corps and local volunteers alerted Air Sea Rescue, and Capt. R E McGraw of Sweetsers Ind was rescued by a Navy helicopter after ejecting.

Mayor Warns Boys on Firearm Law In City Limits

Mayor W. D. Patton told two juveniles in police court to stop shooting a 22 caliber rifle inside the city. The boys faced charges for firing near the Christian Home and Bible School. Patton noted he cannot punish them, but stressed it is illegal to discharge firearms within city bounds. An ordinance requires merchants to have parental consent to sell ammunition. The youths said they were unaware of the rule.

GOC Still Strives for 200 Volunteer Goal in Mount Dora

Mount Dora's Ground Observer Corps aims for a 24 hour watch with 200 volunteers but only 70 are lined up. Two hour weekly shifts from two volunteers per shift are planned at the Lake Dora post. Clubs like Kiwanis Rotary Lions and BPW are aiding, but more help is needed to match Tavares' 180 watchers.
