A lighthearted note from August 27 1970 looks ahead to next week as students prepare to return to school. It playfully recalls "golden school days," the routine of 8:25 a.m. starts, and teachers' reputations, hinting at mixed feelings from pupils about more books and classes.
Three young women Requita Taylor Melissa Dean Martin and Colleen Martin hosted a neighborhood carnival on Saturday to aid Muscular Dystrophy victims. Games included button throw drop the pins sponge toss and a cookie sale.
Mount Dora City Council approved a 50 foot wide clearing through the woods along Simpson Street to connect East Town with Mount Dora Middle School and high school routes. The project aims to provide a safe walking route for students with paving and sidewalks planned later, despite taxpayer concerns over funding.
Doors open at eight as four Mount Dora schools prepare for a record attendance. This year’s enrollment reaches 2,495 students, up from 2,195 last year, with Roseborough Elementary housing about 700 pupils from kindergarten to fourth grade and a staff of 30 teachers including 11 newcomers or transfers.
Mount Dora will experience a city powered blackout from about 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on August 30 while workers replace an old transformer struck by lightning. City officials chose the early hours to minimize citizen inconvenience.
