The city of Mount Dora invites visitors with mild winters and an average 72 degree season. Attractions range from education and libraries to parks, hotels, and sports. Its history blends romance with progress, offering a tranquil, festive atmosphere amid oaks and Spanish moss. Continued on page 6.
All members and friends are invited to a picnic this afternoon Thursday August 20 at Daytona Beach. Meet at the church at 1 00 PM and depart at 1 30 PM for the Beach with transportation for those without cars. Supper served at 5 30 PM from the pavilion for Mount Dora cars.
Billy Gorman of Mount Dora receives a 1500 scholarship for a Master of Arts from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, earning Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi keys. He is taking a summer philosophy course there and has not decided on post graduate studies. Plans are advancing to pave Road No. 85 from Okeechobee to Indiantown.
Chiff Hiatt the Kiwanis speaker argues that communities need honest, capable civic political and social leaders. He says leadership determines a communitys growth and urges selfless service to restore morale amid national economic and social strain. Mr Brown of S. H. is noted.
Mr and Mrs F G MacMahon will manage the Grand View Hotel for the coming season in Mount Dora. The hotel at Fifth avenue and McDonald street overlooks Lake Dora and will be ready for guests by November 15. The couple, popular in Leesburg and North Woodstock, return to Mount Dora after a successful prior stint.
Patricia Patrick, 10, granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Jank H Heath, served as Miss Chamber of Commerce at a baby festival in Marquette Michigan on August 12. The event featured about 250 babies with Heath family ties to the local Chamber of Commerce.
Golden Triangle Post No 2185 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars met Friday night in the town hall Legion room despite a heavy rain. The charter closure for the Baby Post of the state was postponed and will be finalized at the Tavares Pavilion meeting set for Friday August 28.
Mount Dora bowed to Leesburg 6 to 5 in a hard fought, clean contest. Key plays featured Brantley’s long hit and Speck’s rifled throw from right. Stevenson left with a mashed finger after a sacrifice attempt.
New construction and alteration work totaling about 250000 dollars was announced for sites at Palm Beach and Olympia Beach. The project details emphasize new structures and renovations to expand facilities and improve access.
Mr and Mrs George C Keller are vacationing at the Wildacres Hotel near Spruce Pine in Western North Carolina. In a letter received by the Topic editor last Friday Mrs Keller describes writing before a log fire on a chilly mountain day. Mr Keller is president of Mount Dora Publishing Co and Florida representative of Mergenthaler Linotype Co.
County Commissioners petition the State Road Department for a concrete surface on Road No. 2 linking Tavares and Mount Dora. The route will enter at Fifth Avenue, pass Sylvan Shores and Lake Dora, offering a scenic city approach. Work on surfacing will begin after grading.
The Florida Gas Company is rapidly finishing its gas mains to supply Mount Dora with gas by September 1. Officials push to complete the trio of utilities water electricity and gas, enabling the town to welcome the new service.
The county delinquent tax list is published by The Clermont Press. Copies are available for 10 cents by mail or at the Topic office, with a limited supply for Mount Dora residents seeking a copy.
Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce secretary Louise Lane gathered Octagon Soap Wrappers for the Benson Springs Methodist Orphanage. A boys band returned from a state tour, aided by wrappers used to fund new suits and meals arranged on an eight foot kitchen range. Mrs J F Cleary also contributed wrappers as The Topic plans to forward more next week.
A regular league baseball game is set for today at Heim Field at 4 00 between Mount Dora and Astatula. Fans can expect a competitive matchup as the teams clash on the diamond this afternoon.
Dr. W. H. Waller was seriously injured in an automobile accident. Mrs. Elizabeth Waller, of Daytona Beach and Mount Dora, learned of the injury and rushed to Angola, Indiana where her husband is spending the summer with his children. Full details are not yet available.
Seminole County officials strongly bid for Karl Lehmann to serve as secretary of the Seminole County Chamber of Commerce. They propose funding by appropriating one mill for a single purpose to secure Lehmann’s services.
Auditors report from Mount Dora Citrus Growers Association covers twelve years for the local packing house. Florida leads in citrus flavor and juice, with state packing houses totaling about 356. Estimated annual industry value around 72 million dollars, with net grower profit near 1.5 million. Production cost per box about 0.70 dollars, averaging 1.13 dollars net per box after costs. 1930-31 season shows 149,989 boxes handled. 1931 returns incomplete.
