August 12, 1971 issue welcomes back Margot Hosford to the West page. Her column Speaking of Birds resumes as she serves as publicity chairman for the Okla waha Valley Lake County Audubon Society, a revival from earlier Topic features.
Mount Dora Florida, Bee DeNike joins the Topic as staffer after a year with a break for maternity. A.B. graduate of Stetson University majors in journalism. Bee, wife of Renard DeNike, has children Nancy Bly and Leslie, and lives on Page Lane. Moon mission Apollo 15 captivates the family despite TV requests.
Meet the Herb Hawthornes of Mount Dora makers of a contest driven life. Mrs Betty Hawthorne began entering contests ten years ago and has since won cash and merchandise valued at ten to fifteen thousand dollars. They have claimed prizes including a national second prize of four thousand dollars and a first prize freezer, plus jewelry, multiple appliances, clocks, cameras, radios, and various personal items.
Florida Telephone Corp defers plans for a general rate increase after higher first half 1971 operating revenues, led by long distance services, though FTC cautions that rising expenses will push for rates. President Max Wettstein cites June revenue of 11.719 million, up 39 percent from 1970.
The Lake County School Board approved plans to forward action on a new Mount Dora elementary school and additions to Mount Dora Middle School. An open space plan for Triangle Elementary calls for a 520 student first-stage facility across Eudora Road from the Golden Triangle Shopping Center. Architects’ plans for the Middle School addition were approved with bids expected by Oct. 1. Aladdin Interiors of Eustis won the Roseborough Elementary carpeting bid at 2655.68 dollars. The board also delayed the countywide school start time by 15 minutes to 8:15 a.m., subject to Daylight Saving Time changes.
The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce announces a photo contest to select color images for city postcards. Three prizes will be awarded and winners' names printed on the card backs. Submissions go to Dr. R. G. Wells, P O Box 427, Mount Dora, by December 1. Judging and printing occur in January 1972.
Students who moved to the area this summer planning to attend Mount Dora High School are urged to register before school starts August 30. The guidance office operates 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
County School Superintendent Dr Clyde Stevens says principals will present dress code modifications at the next board meeting. Lunch prices stay 35 cents elementary and 40 cents high school. Personnel actions include two instructional appointments Alice E Priess to Mount Dora Middle and Shirley M Woodward to Roseborough Elementary and the resignation of Russell C Thistlewood as custodian Mount Dora High. Non instructional Mount Dora appointments list Peggy Crank Ella M Harris Martha L Milsap as teacher aides Mount Dora Middle and Ange line J Pohilman Mae E Young as clerical and library aide Mount Dora High.
