McCabe Nominated for Kiwanis Division 19 Lieutenant Governor

Bernard McCabe of Mount Dora, longtime Kiwanis member and former president, was unanimously nominated Monday night to serve as lieutenant governor of Kiwanis Division 19 Florida District. He directs education for Lake County schools and will be presented at the statewide Kiwanis convention in Tampa September 12 to 14 for acceptance as successor to Gail Sims. He assumes office January 1, 1966.

Countywide Toll Free Phone Service Proposed for Lake County

The Florida Telephone Corp plans countywide toll free service to Mount Dora and surrounding towns pending Florida Public Service Commission approval. If adopted, Mount Dora subscribers could call Leesburg Clermont Umatilla and other areas toll free with monthly rates starting at 0.75 to 4.25 dollars based on line type. The proposal, presented by Max E. Wettstein, seeks countywide extension after earlier East Lake County plans.

Mount Dora Grid Drills Begin Monday for Candidates

Mount Dora head coach Jesse Dyess announced two daily grid drills starting Monday with 7 am and 4 pm sessions for varsity hopefuls and a single afternoon report for junior varsity. Early practices emphasize conditioning and play patterns before uniforms and heavier work. Dyess expects 17 varsity and up to 25 junior varsity candidates and urges physical exams prior to the first session.

Registration Set For New Students In Mount Dora

Mount Dora area students entering grades 7 through 12 for the 1969 70 year must register at Mount Dora High School between August 16 and 23. Office hours are 8 am to noon and 1 pm to 4 pm. If needed, call 383 3033 to arrange an appointment. A parent or guardian must sign the Pupil Assignment. A three day wait applies to all new students.

Whittington Wins Fifth In State Freestyle Event

Allen Whittington of the Mount Dora Swim Club earned fifth in the boys 15 through 17 50 yard freestyle after a four way tie for fourth and a runoff, with finals canceled by rain. Fifteen Mount Dora swimmers competed at Brandon in a meet spanning state wide entries except Miami area.
