Lake County reports strong July War Bond activity with nine post offices and one bank contributing through noon Saturday August 7. First National of Leesburg leads with 27112 50, Clermont bank second with 20870 75, Mount Dora third with 11325 00, and Eustis near 10406 25. Clermont post office tops county savings stamps with 1860 00, Leesburg second, Eustis third, plus varied post offices reporting totals and E and F bond purchases. Total E bonds sold reach 100327 00 with stamps at 7962 15.
The Army Postal Service announces September 15 to October 15 as Christmas Mailing Month for gifts to soldiers overseas. Packages must not exceed five pounds, 15 inches in length, 36 inches length plus girth, and be packed in sturdy boxes marked Christmas Gift Parcel.

R E Norris reports to the Lake County Chamber that farmers invested about 100000 dollars in war bonds and stamps through soil conservation payments. The effort surpassed the 75000 dollar goal and certified funds to obtain a pursuit plane for Lake County, joining the Florida citrus farmers fleet. The total payments from the Agricultural Conservation Association totaled about 80000 dollars.
John L. Swort moves from Port Allegany Pa and rents Fletcher Crane house on East Eleventh Avenue. Several families and service members lease homes along Gorham Eleventh Tremain Ninth avenues as cement contractor workers build Mount Dora to Plymouth road.
Lieutenant Colonel Brigadier General Vivian Collins announces Major David L. Wiley’s promotion to lieutenant colonel in the Florida State Guard. He will remain commanding officer of the Fourth Battalion, consisting of Company A Leesburg, Company B Eustis and Mount Dora, Company C Sanford, and Company D Orlando. Wiley previously served as a captain in World War I’s Rainbow Division.
The Service Men's Club hosted a Saturday dance drawing many attendees including several girls from Eustis. Pies and cold drinks were served during the evening. Attendance this week was 133.
The Red Cross announces support for families of prisoners of war in Japan. Cable messages costing about six dollars can be sent using blanks available at the Red Cross room. Home service will provide blanks Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings.
Friends report Carey Colley has received an appointment to the U S Military Academy at West Point for 1944 while he studies at Marion Institute in Marion Alabama. He holds the rank of cadet lieutenant and commanding officer of a company and will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U S Army before departing Marion for West Point. The appointment came through Congressman Joe Hendricks.
Dr Grady Snowden pastor of the First Baptist Church of DeLand will preach at the local First Baptist Church both morning and evening Sunday August 15. The church expresses gratitude for his visit and anticipates a large audience for the services.
The Mount Dora School Band played for the Teen Club luncheon last Wednesday. They also gave a concert at the venue from 5 30 to 6 30.
David B. Durden, 21, son of Mr and Mrs R C Durden, was accidentally killed when he fell from a three story window in Savannah. He worked as a yard welder for Southeastern Shipyards and was visiting the Teasley residents. The body was sent to Mount Dora for funeral services held at Church of God with Rev L A Ford. burial followed at Forest Cemetery. He leaves two sisters Alma Reaves and Evelene Durden and four brothers Louis C Oscar L L B and R C Durden Jr. all of Mount Dora.

Mount Dora's lawn bowling squad finished ninth in a six-team group at the Thistle Fernleigh Woodland event in Hartford August 2–3. New Jersey’s team won first with 12 points. Mount Dora totaled 93 points over six games, with coach Skip Bryant praised for guiding a steady effort against clubs from Boston Springfield Providence and many Connecticut towns.
Lake County forestry officials urge farmers to salvage waste wood from forests as a profitable source during shortages. Extension Forester L T Nieland explains that log leftovers can be shipped for food and medicine packaging and, when processed, yield increasing values up to 500 dollars per unit in rayon conversion. The committee asks writers to notify the Chamber of Commerce in Tavares to organize marketing of this material.
Mr W W Belf turned 91 on Saturday August 7 and joked he may be the town’s oldest man while noting two women are older. His wife brought breakfast and a letter from a Kansas daughter congratulating him.
