Knights of Pythias Lodge 134 Meeting Recalls Founding Members

Last week’s Knights of Pythias gathering drew strong attendance. H. A. Harrold and Frank Hardy, charter members, spoke on starting the lodge with sixteen founders. W. F. Moon was the first knighted candidate. The first officers listed were C. L. Mimincht, J. J. Chapman, and H. A. Harrold. An altar cabinet was crafted from a cradle given by Ivan Franklin. A lodge progress report followed. A picnic and fish fry are planned for Thursday September 1 at Lakeside Inn grounds by Knights and Pythian Sisters.

String Band Contest Finals Set at State Theatre Eustis

The string band contest concludes at the State Theatre in Eustis on Saturday at 9:00 p m with audience applause determining winners. Entries include Mount Dora Altoona and Umatilla bands. Clayton Perreault of Tavares will host. Bargain Day 10 and 25 cent prices apply.

F H Caton and his brother Bob Caton of Orlando delivered an entertaining program with many straight of hand tricks and humor at the Kiwanis luncheon. Mr and Mrs George C Keller business manager and editor of the Topic left last Thursday for Banner Elk North Carolina. They expect to take a short two weeks vacation there before returning to Mount Dora.

The Golden Triangle Laundry and Dry Cleaning plant on Fourth Street is repainting its office in cream and black. New office furniture and draperies are being added, with the front of the building to be repainted as well.

The Lake County Handicap Golf Tournament at Lake County Country Club reached the end of the first round Tuesday. Seven local men entered. three have won matches to reach the first flight, with rising players from Mount Dora including D. B. Thayer Grady Simpson and W. A. Vincent. Second flight includes John Griswold W. J. Johnson Ed Nutter and Clayton Tremain. Leon Cheek has yet to play his first match.

Seventh District Conference American Legion Huge Success

Mount Dora Post No. 35 hosted the Seventh District Conference of the Florida American Legion on August 7 with delegates from sixteen Posts.
