Mount Dora and New Smyrna Beach split results in a playoff series at Jaycee Little League Field. Mount Dora won 4 2 on Sunday with Bobby Harris earning the win and Steve Allbritton homering for Mount Dora.
Lake County Board of Public Instruction approves an 8 159 236 operating budget for 1967 68 with a 300 across the board raise for teachers. The board notes a 19 teacher shortfall for 1967 68 and bids for the Eustis Vocational Technical School will be opened August 4.
A Social Security representative will be at Mount Dora City Hall from 2 to 4 p.m. on August 10 and 24 to answer questions and assist with benefits. Bring your Social Security card proof of age earnings records and proof of earnings to receive faster service.
Mount Dora taxi driver Harvey Williams, 62, was attacked and robbed by two men after they hired a ride from Donnelly Cab Stand. They directed him to a secluded farm near Astatula where one sat beside him and the other in the rear. Williams was knocked unconscious and the brass knuckles assailant robbed the cash box containing about $6 in coins.
Florida Comptroller Fred O. Dickinson Jr reports 12 000 checks will be mailed to small car owners as refunds from the license tag statute. Amounts range from 2.70 to 8.10 dollars with potential total refunds up to 1.6 million dollars for as many as 200 000 eligible owners. Applications must be filed before disbursement and refunds go out in order received.
Lake County Sheriff's Dept filed a formal first degree murder charge Monday against Mark Baird 34 of Clermont for the killing of Carl Nelson Sheppard 25 of Cocoa on July 29 near the Eustis Plaza Shopping Center after a car collision on Highway 441. A prelim hearing is set for Aug 15 at 11 a.m. in County Court House. Chief Deputy Malcolm McCall leads the investigation with Eustis police and county deputies assisting.
City Council unanimously approved buying Fisherman's Headquarters and the adjacent Waite property for 37 500 and 12 500 respectively to extend lake frontage beyond 1 000 ft. The purchases, aiding lakefront beautification, were supported by Council members Champion Houser Montgomery Turner and Wason, with Schubert and Dake absent.
The Lake County Chamber of Commerce is assembling a guide of visitor spots. It will include plants with special tours, listing visiting days and tour times for public access.
The Howey project receives a $64 909 Title III grant to create an Earth and Space Science Teaching and Study Center serving Lake Citrus and Sumter Counties at Howey Elementary School. Sam Commander will direct with Carl Pettitt as associate. program aims include a model classroom, in service training, field tests, and a central resource library.
