The Lake County observers traveled to Tampa on Sunday for a conference and to visit the filter center. District Director Denslow and others urged better care of the roof area, noting discarded pencils and burnt matches pose fire hazards. They seek more volunteers for graveyard and daytime watches as aircraft spotting remains vital to defense.
Mount Dora School Band members enjoyed a 3:30 pm boat trip on the City of Dora on April 16 with Band Boosters. Though director Manuel Sedano could not join, he promised a later Trimble Park reunion. Mothers joined the trip as the group toured Lakes Dora Beauclair and Carlton ending at Trimble Park for a surprise visit from Chief Ho-To-Pi of the Cheyenne Tribes who spoke during the picnic.
Mount Dora High School senior class was entertained by grade mothers and a grade father on April 13. After weather delays, they held a picnic supper at the U. S. O. Hall in Tangerine with games, dancing, and a ping pong setup. Gratitude was given to Mrs. Fred Watts and the Tangerine Improvement Society for hall use.
The Department of Agriculture secures 150 pressure cookers for home canning to supplement rationed foods next winter. Due to limited supply, rationing will be conducted via State USDA War Boards and County Farm Rationing Committees for rural and urban residents. Applicants may be individuals, neighborhood pools, or organizations sharing a cooker. each must sign MR-20a. Lake County residents should contact the Home Demonstration Agent in Tavares for an application blank.
Ruth Irene Risley and Floyd Risley keep a flock at their Tremain Street home. Ruth Irene reports unusually large eggs, often two yolks, and sent one to the Topic office on Tuesday. One egg measured three inches long and weighed several ounces, with hopes for a dozen such eggs weighing about two and a quarter pounds.
The regular meets of Mount Dora Chapter 103 O S will be held at the Masonic Hall April 22 at 8 p m. Members and visiting Oo S members are invited. A birthday party follows the meeting celebrating the chapter's 25th anniversary.

The Lions Club gathered Monday night at Hotel Mount Dora with no formal business. Members conducted extensive discussion about the upcoming state conference scheduled for May 2 3 and 4 in Mount Dora. Detailed conference information will be published next week.
A union Easter sunrise service is planned for 7:30 a.m. on the lawn of the Lake Side Inn. The program features hymns, scripture by Dr. O W Foye, prayers by Saxton Doggett, anthems by youth choirs, a sermon by Dr. Arthur Pratt, and a benediction. Public is invited.
A joint Holy Week service for Thursday evening is arranged by the Methodist and Community churches in the Community Church with an Upper Room style Communion. On Good Friday at 7 30 pm the Baptist Methodist and Community churches hold a union service in the Methodist Church with readings from the first Good Friday records and extended silent prayer.
A Good Friday service will be held at St Thomas Episcopal Church in Eustis from 3 to 4 pm on Friday April 23 with meditations and devotions on the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ Easter Day services follow at 8 30 10 00 and 11 00 am in St Thomas Church
For the summer of 1943 weekly half-holidays will be Wednesday afternoons instead of Thursdays. Merchants voted through the Chamber of Commerce to set the change. Stores will close every Wednesday afternoon from the first Wednesday in May to the last Wednesday in September.

Kiwanis member J. Carlisle Rogers of Leesburg will speak at today's Kiwanis meeting about the sweet potato. Dr. Otis W. Foye spoke last week on Thomas Jefferson, praising his leadership alongside Washington and Lincoln and detailing Jefferson's life from birth in 1743 to his presidency and Monticello. He highlighted Jefferson's commitment to individual liberty and limited government, noting his roles as Virginia governor, ambassador to France, and secretary of state. Jefferson died July 4, 1826, and his tombstone bears the epitaph chosen by himself.
Sgt William J Stevens known as Bill Stevens and son of Mrs Lyle Stevens of Lake Worth formerly Mount Dora writes from North Africa that he is well and safe. He is sister to Mrs Esther Honour and Mrs Mildred Dennerle.
Donald Slack earns second class rating as ship fitter and teaches advanced welding in South Richmond Virginia. Richard G. Shipes Jr in Navy service returns from sea duty and expects to be home around early May on fur lough. Lloyd Morris arrives for a ten day furlough with his father Homer Morris from Philadelphia. Major Thomas H. Cogley transferred to Charlottesville Virginia to the School of Military Government after time at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Mrs. Cooley and Betty visit him in Charlottesville. Charles Dudley Boxell of 525 S Clayton Street enrolls as aviation cadet in Army Air Forces Pre Flight School for Pilots at Maxwell Field near Montgomery Alabama.
The Mount Dora junior class and leaders including J J White oversaw a stamp and bond sale raising funds to buy six jeeps worth of stamps and bonds. Many donors honored relatives and service members such as George W Malone George J White Oscar Stephens Jr and Lt Alfred Carter among others.
Fleet owners of commercial vehicles must file quarterly mileage reports with the ODT by April 30. George H. Cochrane, district manager, warns penalties for noncompliance. Under General Order No. 21, those with three or more rubber-borne vehicles must report. single-unit owners keep records on their Certificate of War Necessity.
The sixtieth annual Florida Congregational Christian Conference will run May 4 to 6 at Miami Beach Community Church with the theme The Christian Effort for Todays Needs. Dr. James A Richards of Mount Dora will preach the Tuesday 745 p m service and lead the communion. Conference officers include Frank Bridgman and Miss Madeleine Milner.
Soldiers at Leesburg airport seek magazines to read. Bring any donated issues to the Red Cross room on Avenue, and the air base men will collect them for camp use.
The Florida Department of U S W V hosts three public sessions May 9 to 12. A Tree Ceremony on May 6 dedicates a tree at City Hall with Band involvement. Memorial Service May 6 in City Auditorium honors fallen members. May 10 features joint Auxiliary and Department addresses at City Auditorium with guests including Gen. Vivian Collins.
The Florida Dehydration Company plant at Zellwood suffered a total loss on its first test run, insured, with 50 workers battling flames using 1000 feet of hose before Mount Dora and Apopka fire crews stopped spread. The Chicago firm Sokol and Co. owned the plant, a Florida first of its kind with major government contracts. Facilities such as boiler room and water systems survived and rebuilding is planned promptly.
