Mount Dora Woman's Club Sees New Members and Health Drive

The Mount Dora Woman's Club added 50 new members this year and 110 in the last two years, totaling 239. A mobile x ray unit visit is planned for April 17 at the public school on Clayton Street 4 to 6 pm and 6 to 8 pm in East Town. A memorial for three members was conducted as Miss Madeline Milner read Requiem. Flowers by Mrs Sleight and a song by Mrs Esther Wyatt Bishop marked the event. New president Mrs Walter D Patton urged committee service and club cooperation.

Lake County Tops Red Cross Fund Quota

Lake County reports through March 31 total contributions of $21,836.12, 104 percent of its $20,940 campaign goal, under County Chairman Frank W. Stebbins. Mount Dora area led by George J. White exceeded its $2,400 quota with $3,124.52.

Mount Dora Boy Scouts Attend County Court of Honor

Troop No. 19 of Boy Scouts of Mount Dora joined the county Court of Honor in Clermont. Christ Jacobsen Jr Herbert Trenham and Billy LaFroos earned First Class, Robert Hall received a swimming merit badge, and under Scoutmaster Jack Groves and Pearly Safford the group camped at Rock Springs overnight before a planned officer installation at the school auditorium on April 15.

Lake County Teachers Receive 25 Percent Pay Increase

The Lake County Board of Public Instruction approved a 25 percent salary raise for 218 teachers and seven supervising principals, effective for the 1946 47 term. The increase costs $408,000 annually, funded by a three and a half millage hike and state contributions.

Lake County tax roll collections reached 97.01 percent on April 1 1946 per county tax collector Mrs Pearl Cullen. In 1945 at the same date 94.53 percent had been collected. Sixteen towns posted 100 percent for personal property taxes. Delinquent properties will be advertised in upcoming issues.

The Lake County Chamber of Commerce released an up to date county road map and population figures for each town and the county, based on the latest state census. Free distribution is available at the chamber office in the Court House, Tavares, with a county road map from the State Road Department priced at 25 cents per copy.

Free Chest X Rays For Tuberculosis In Mount Dora

The Florida state x ray mobile unit will be at Mount Dora High School on Wednesday April 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. for free tuberculosis screening for anyone 15 or older. Afterward the unit goes to East Town at Grandview and Grant streets from 6 to 8 p.m. to serve colored residents with the same free service. The test is endorsed by the Woman's Club and Lions Club, with volunteers from both assisting.

Baptist Revival to Close with Evening Service

Two week long Baptist Church revival ends this Sunday with a final evening service. Attendance has been large with overflowing crowds expected. The morning sermon is The Way of Life and the evening topic The Way of Death. Baptismal service follows the evening. Gospel singer J Dwight Peck leads both services. Town Council approves plans for twelve shuffleboard courts

Regular meeting with Mayor and officials sees a committee appointed to confer with Park Commission on adding four courts or five with private financing to reach twelve total. Soloist Bob Burkart Performs at Lenten Crucifixion

Veteran Bob Burkart of Mount Dora was a soloist in The Citadel choir during a special Lenten performance of Sir John Stainer's Crucifixion in the cadet chapel at Charleston on April 7. Burkart, a Cadet from 1940 to 1943, sang in the cadet choir and glee club and later returned as a veterans student.

Beginning next week East Town starts garbage collection although trucks cannot cover all sections. Residents not served directly must bring refuse to designated points and cooperate. Collection day for East Town will be Wednesdays.

Special Schedule for Bells of St Marys at Princess Theatre

The Bells of St Marys arrives at the Princess Theatre for April 16 and 17 with specific showtimes on both days. Shows begin at 7 and 9:05 p m Tuesday and 3 5 06 7 12 9 18 p m Wednesday with all seating admitted after intermission. Admission is 40 cents for adults and 9 cents for children under 12.
