Easter Eve Fire on Fifth Avenue Damaged Local Businesses
About twenty years ago a fire on Fifth Avenue started near a drop cord in a storage room and burned between fifty and sixty thousand dollars in damage to Story Brothers Grocery and the Princess Theatre. Fire Chief Harold Larsen described the blaze as a furnace like surge of flames with flames shooting from the rear as firefighters arrived. Patrons fled the theatre while hundreds watched the downtown battle. The fire was spotted by R V Parker and Miss Stella Owens attempted to call the fire department but wires had burned. The incident followed by a city chapter update on American Legion Auxiliary officers and Lions Club painting the new municipal pool blue for a summer recreation season.
