Cancer Drive Opens for Mount Dora Campaign

The 1957 Cancer Drive opened in Mount Dora on Wednesday with a goal of 450 dollars to support cancer research and patient aid. Mrs. Frederick W. Council Tuesday night refused to relax the city prohibition on door-to-door solicitation after C R Metcalf of Miami argued his water-type vacuum cleaner would benefit health. Police halted Metcalf’s crew last Saturday as residents reported aggressive calling. A homeowner found no one at the door when the bell rang.

Lavonnie Jerue 28 an employee of the First National Bank for 11 years died at Waterman Memorial Hospital last Saturday. Mount Dora Red Cross Drive Surpasses Goal in 1957

Negro Pool Project Starts With City Aid Financing

City Council approved a go ahead on building a 28 by 75 foot Negro community pool beside the new Negro school. Financing includes 10 000 from a civic club drive and city matching borrowed funds from the 1941 sinking fund. Construction to begin before end of April with bids opened April 16.

Cain Reports 18 Homes Benefit From Valuation Action

Tax Assessor John Cain told City Council on Tuesday night that 18 homeowners benefited from the Board of Equalization meeting. He noted 49 people spoke seeking relief from the city's 20 percent rise in assessed property values, and 16 letters came from out of town owners. Of the challenged assessments, 18 were lowered while others held steady.
