Colorful sails will once again dot the muddy waters of Lake Dora as boats sail at sunset next week. The scene is described as beautiful and serene, with a nod to the impractical joke of April Fools' Day.
Mount Dora Yacht Club and Chamber of Commerce prepare for the 18th Annual Sail Boat Regatta on Lake Dora Saturday and Sunday April 3 and 4. About 100 boats are anticipated with 18 classes including Stars from St. Petersburg and Jacksonville and Finns possibly joining under 150 class. Registration at Commerce or Gilbert Park closes noon Saturday. trophies awarded for each class, with dinner and dance at the Yacht Club Saturday evening.
Dorans win two major trophies at the Lake County Fair Flower Show. Flora Haas and Armer Johnson receive top ribbons. Alexis Cyran and Allison Rehbaum also earn Bank awards. High School winners from Mount Dora gain blue and red ribbons in Artistic Design and Horticulture.
Last week's Lake County Fair honored Mount Dora participants in the Arts and Crafts Division. Richard Jackson earned a blue ribbon and top class honors for his Easter Egg Tree display featuring elaborately decorated eggs.
Frances Shipes earned two blue ribbons for a stained Shepherd Boy and Girl and a Pixie. David Shipes earned a blue ribbon for a Panther made for Junior Division. Merrill Lynn Shipes won for a poodle in Junior Division. Joyce Makin won best in class for a stained lamp. Reva Thornburg, Mrs. William Whitefield, Mrs. Joseph Tomasek, and Mrs. G S Horsford Jr also received blue ribbons and best in class in various textile and craft entries.
Gilbert Park hosts registration before noon Skipper s meeting at 12 30 p m and starting times at 1 00 p m 3 00 p m with canoe at 1 30 p m and pram at 1 33 p m Mount Dora Yacht Club hosts dinner at 6 p m and a dance at 9 p m Sunday events begin at 10 00 a m and 1 00 p m with a 10 30 a m dance and 10 33 a m pram the midday ballast is 1 50 per person.
