Lake County Leads Florida Chamber Membership Race

Lake County Chamber of Commerce membership surged past Seminole and trails only Jacksonville in the state. Mount Dora led the counties with 174 new memberships followed by Eustis Clermont Leesburg and Tavares. Members include sustaining 12.50, contributing 5 and regular 1 dollars, with dues payable at the courthouse office or through local directors.

Artist Guest Browne Visits Davis After Florida Sketching

Miss Evelyn J. Browne of Mount Kisco New York visits Miss Florence M. Davis for several weeks. Browne spent the winter at the Ringling Art School in Sarasota Florida taking a course in outdoor sketching in water color and oil. She has given several showings of her Florida scenery pictures.

Bible Study Classes Begin Next Wednesday at High School

Mammoth Cabbage and Datura Highlight Local Gardens

The mammoth cabbage in the Topic window came from Carl Mortensen sen s garden on Lake Dora near the Topic office. Its outer leaves span 36 inches and the head is 11 inches across. A double purple datura from Mrs Mortensen s garden last week adds color, with white yellow and purple varieties noted as glorified jimson weeds.

Murder of Elder in East Town by Remus Walker

Green Walker, 80 to 85, a respected former slave and longtime East Town resident, died after Remus Walker assaulted him in a yard dispute. A coroner's jury urged first degree murder charges. Remus admitted the killing and threatened others. East Town residents, mostly African American, were stunned by the violence.

Nearly $100000 in Lake County real estate sales were reported in Mount Dora Tavares and Groveland. The largest deal involved a 53 acre Hunter bearing grove plus 80 acres on the Tavares Clermont road sold to Thomas Guerney of Orlando for 30000 cash. George Malone handled the sale from his Lake County Medical Center bed. Other transactions include Tangerine parcels bought by A C Quixley Realty Co and 10 acres from Bidwell Estate. Tangerine Improvement Society purchased 5 acres. George Cary bought Clarence M Gray’s Sylvan Shores home via J J West Realty. F A Mason bought the Okerlind holdings at Groveland with plans to move to Sweden for a three month visit. Mr and Mrs Pries of McHenry Illinois also acquired property on the Tampa road and plan to winter in central Florida.

Home Sold in Mount Dora as Gledhill Sells Fifth Avenue

Mrs. S. W. Gledhill sold her Mount Dora home at 328 Fifth Avenue before departing for Bridgeport Connecticut. The buyers are Mr. and Mrs. G D Denbroeder of Massachusetts, guests at Lakeside Inn. Gledhill plans to spend winters in Mount Dora, staying in a local hotel.

Stetson Student Tapped by Mystic Krewe In State Tour

M. J. Bouterse Jr of Orlando former Mount Dora senior at Stetson University joined 35 other students in a 26 city Easter tour. The group spoke before high school assemblies. Fine Hammond Organ Recital At Mount Dora Church

The Community church hosted a near full house recital featuring the newly installed Hammond electric organ. Organist Mr. Kimble demonstrated the instrument’s reed and chime tones with varied numbers from Nevin to Herbert ending with the Doxology and Star Spangled Banner as the audience rose. Bob Quixley Wins Again in Florida Swim Meets

Bob Quixley captured the 200 yard breaststroke in the Florida vs Georgia Tech meet with a 2 55 1 10 time. He won again next day against Clemson in Gainesville posting 2 58 6. The Florida Gators extended their undefeated run and claimed a 4430 victory over Clemson, sustaining their Southeastern Conference title streak.

Easter Services Draw Large Congregations at Lake Dora

Despite chilly wind about two hundred attended the Easter gathering with service at Lake Dora facing the water and festive decorations. Dr Heber D Ketcham delivered a brief message while Dr Andrew M Brodie gave the prayer and Rev Arthur Miller read Van Dyke. Choirs from Methodist and Congregational churches, led by Miss Jeannette Pike, performed, and attendees later enjoyed breakfast at Lakeside Inn. The 11 o clock services also drew strong crowds with ample seating and special Easter music.

Citrus Trees From Lake Co to Great Lakes Expo

A grove of full grown citrus trees from Lake County boxes for shipment to Cleveland for Florida exhibit at the Great Lakes Exposition on Lake Erie's shores. Trees weighing 4000 to 5000 pounds are moved from DeLand to await loading into ten cars for rail shipment. Florida foresters expect the trees to bloom and bear fruit during the expo, delighting visitors.

On invitation of John J Higgins of Boston supported by Mrs Higgins the Topics business manager enjoyed a fishing outing on Lake Dora the Dora River and Lake Beauclaire. Higgins returned without a strike while the BM displayed a ten pound bass and took home a mounted specimen of ten to twelve pounds. The BM notes the ten pounder is small for him and anticipates Higgins returning next winter to show a bigger Lake Dora catch.
