Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said 2015 saw a record 10,125,149 acres burned across the United States with more than 50 fires over 50,000 acres and 20 over 100,000, while 4,500 homes were destroyed and 13 wildland firefighters died. He urged Congress to pass the Wildfire Disaster Funding Act and warned that fire suppression costs strained the Forest Service budget, costing 2.6 billion dollars in 2015 and diverting funds from restoration and fuels management.
