County farmers face rapid blue mold spread across tobacco beds in Surry and nearby Stokes. County Agent J W Crawford says many calls come daily for guidance. He advises Bordeaux mixture spraying, sun exposure for beds, careful fertilization, and possible soil amendments to slow damage.
About 100 unemployed men aged 18 to 25 in Surry County are examined for the labor army quota. Selected groups will travel to Winston-Salem for final exams then Fort Bragg for two weeks of training before entering camps in Western North Carolina parks. Enrollees receive 30 dollars monthly, with 25 dollars sent home. Government covers food shelter and clothes for six months. Mrs. C. 8S. Clarke of Mount Airy is a surgical patient and doing nicely. Mr. R. A. Inman of Mount Airy is a medical case. Mr. J. W. Williams of Meadows of Dan Virginia is a patient for operation. Mrs. R. Paul Sanford of Stuart Virginia is a patient for operation. Miss Lucy Simmons of Francisco and Lucy Shelton of Pinnacle were discharged.
County Commissioners in regular session at Dobson order a 20 percent reduction in real estate valuations for tax purposes. The measure applies to the entire county with potential further adjustments in individual cases showing substantial loss, as listings are updated this season.

More than 500 voters went to the polls Monday in a municipal election. The ballot rejected Sunday moving picture shows 418 to 108, with no ballots for Sunday baseball or pool rooms. New city government to be led by Mayor Edward C. Ashby and six commissioners.
Eleven beer retail licenses were issued by the City Commission in a special session. Dealers opened with beer priced at 25 to 30 cents, later dropping to 10 to 15 cents. Licenses cost 65 dollars total for city, county, and federal approvals, with Mount Airy listings and several outside-town licenses noted. Internal Revenue Agent C M Jones was in town collecting federal taxes.
Mrs A J Wagner died at home Monday after a brief illness of leucocythemia. She was 43, born Jennie Cole in Grand Rapids. The Wagner family moved through several states before settling in this city six years ago. Survived by husband and two children Marian Wagner and another.
Charles Brindle, driver for Swift & Co meat products, faces a Recorders Court hearing on Monday for reckless driving. Witnesses say his two ton International crossed the center on a curve, causing a Piat Rock school bus to sideswipe the bridge and narrowly avoid a head on collision. Bus driver Lacy Mills and passenger Miss Myrtle Gwyn suffered injuries.
Deputy sheriff Frank Gentry aged about 65 died at five o'clock Thursday morning at his Mountain Park home after a brief pneumonia illness. He had served two years as deputy under Sheriff John D. Thompson and was a noted farmer and community leader. Survived by wife and several children including son Gorrell Gentry of the Temple Service Station in town.
Mr Howard Hooker son of Mr and Mrs J T Hooker of this city has been seriously ill following an operation for acute appendicitis A hospital report on Thursday afternoon said his condition is showing some improvement but remains serious
The new city officials move to repair South Street from Granite to Rockford Street using unemployed labor. The plan uses relief funds for three months and a city dump truck to haul rock, spreading a six inch layer for a low cost street improvement.
Welfare reports show 1807 families aided in Surry County during April, with $8970.59 spent split among office expenses employed labor and direct relief. Mount Airy city aided 104 families, with $571 for work and $447 for direct relief. Gardens seeds distributed totaled 2000 packages costing 38 cents each, valued at about 240 dollars.
Two years for arson were given to Prince Worrell in Dobson court this week as part of a theft and insurance scheme involving a car fire. Johnnie Brooks received two years for stealing a school voucher worth 67.38 dollars, while Mrs. Billings was jailed eight months for her role.
Mount Airy high school beat Granite Quarry 2 1 in a pitcher’s duel behind two home runs by Dean and Badgett. Lovill Dean pitched a fourteenth strikeout game and Mount Airy advances with one win left to claim the western crown, facing Paw Creek Saturday for a chance at Chapel Hill.
On May 10 the United Daughters of the Confederacy will decorate graves at the cemetery for Confederate and World War dead. Those with soldier relatives buried there are invited to help by contributing flowers or decorating their own relatives' graves. Flowers may be sent to Mrs. John T. Moore or Mrs. J. D. McCollum. Plags will mark graves and a program is planned at the high school building.
Dr I T Jacobs will deliver the commencement sermon to Beulah Maieh school Monday evening at eight o clock. The public is invited.
