Local Health Officer Dr. K K C Franklin said 1507 vaccination forms have been returned by Surry County parents for first and second graders. He expects 80 percent once all forms are in, vaccines likely available in April and free for eligible children.
Dr. C N Clark 77 of Lake Junaluska died of a heart attack last Friday in Waynesville. He served as superintendent for Salisbury and Waynesville districts and as pastor in multiple states including Mount Airy North Carolina. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church Waynesville and his body was sent to St Louis for graveside rites. He is survived by his wife a brother and sister two daughters and a grandson. born in Arkansas he studied at Hendrix College and began church work in 1900 in St Louis. He served in Ashland Kentucky and Charleston West Virginia before joining the Western North Carolina conference in 1931 and retiring four years ago. He later led two rural Haywood churches until health forced retirement.
Mrs. Vance Lawson of Mount Airy Route 2 Klatt Rock said two men broke in as she and her three children slept. They kicked the door and threatened to kill her. she fled to a neighbor then returned to find her children safe inside.
Pfc Aubrey E McBride son of Mr and Mrs Wade McBride Mount Airy route 6 serves with V Corps 1st Field Artillery Battery in Bremerhaven Germany. His unit first to field the Honest John rocket a free flight atomic capable weapon designed for ground warfare. A 1952 Flat Rock High School graduate he joined the Army in September 1953.
Miss Cora Bomar state Department of Public Instruction library advisor toured Surry County and Elkin City Schools noting central libraries in some elementary schools and improved library atmospheres. She urged ongoing participation, weekly library access for each grade, and the use of audio visual materials alongside books to broaden reading and information access.
William Edward Payne, 28, a Negro, is hospitalized in Elkin with gunshot wounds from a Sunday night shooting in front of Mabel Bowman’s home. He is reported satisfactory. Deputies Lowe and Monday and Patrolman Howell investigate. no arrest yet.
Pfe. Willard, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy D. Willard of Cana Virginia, has arrived on Okinawa and serves as assistant gunner in Company D of the Ryukyus Command 75th Regimental Combat Team. He joined the Army in August 1984 and trained at Fort Lewis Washington.
Mount Airy five drug stores begin a new closing policy at 8 p.m. yesterday after managers agreed at a prior meeting. The stores had previously closed at 6 p.m. All locations will keep 8 a.m. open hours.
Marine Pfe. Floyd H. Chilton Jr of Mount Airy arrived in Hawaii in February with the 4th Marines infantry regiment of the 3rd Marine Division. The unit will be stationed at Kaneohe Bay on Oahu after leaving Camp Nara near Osaka Japan.
At Flat Rock, 93 Granite Cutters Union members faced Deputy R B Billings as the Em ployment Security Commission reviews who among about 300 quarry workers were eligible for unemployment compensation after a February 3 strike. The decision hinges on union involvement and department affiliation.

About 300 workers at the North Carolina Granite Corporation quarry in Flat Rock returned to work after a Friday meeting between a Granite Cutters International Union committee and company president John I. Frank. The union later approved a settlement described as satisfactory, with reports of a two and a half cent per hour raise now and another two and a half cent raise in February 1956 under a two year contract, though terms were not officially released. The strike began February 3 after parties failed to reach a contract by January 31, prompting layoffs and limited action by non union workers.
At Wytheville, the Old Dominion Turnpike Authority and J. E. Greiner Co engineers outlined a true divided dual lane highway from West Virginia to North Carolina. A March 22 route target and appointment of Victor Poole as project engineer were announced, with a possible reverse traffic flow to enhance safety.
W. Reid Fulp, 60, farmer of Westfield Route 1 and native of Stokes County, died Saturday morning in a Winston-Salem hospital after about a month of illness. Survived by wife and children, he was buried at Boyles Chapel Primitive Baptist Church cemetery after services led by Rev. Tom Cook and Elders Millard Vaden and Will Inman.
Rev Delmar D Hodges of Mt Airy, supervisor of the Mount Airy Tobacco Market, was listed as improving Monday after an emergency appendectomy at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He had been in serious condition Sunday and suffered a heart attack about a month ago.
Mount Airy experienced power cuts Monday from 25 minutes in the business district to about 90 minutes in the quarry area. Duke Power Company manager J. A. Wier cited a burned line and substation relay failures on Galloway Street as the cause. Crews worked in heavy rain to repair the East Oak Street line near the Ararat River bridge, restoring service after rapid repairs by local staff.
A white wheel and a 600-16 Firestone tubeless tire were taken from a truck in the Ford Motor Company parking area on Virginia Street Sunday night. The loss was estimated at 55 dollars per police report received Monday.

Gates of Ararat, both previously in Desert Rock VI, watched an explosion from 4000 yards away. Matthews serves at Sharpe Depot California as supply handler. Gates is first sergeant of the 53d QM Subsistence at Sharpe Depot.
Deputy Morris W. Monday chased a Virginia licensed Oldsmobile on East Street after clocking a high speed. He failed to make a curve on the Davia curve and crashed into a stone wall in front of Harvey Walker’s home. The deputy was uninjured but his car was demolished.
