A Sunday accident on Lowgap mountain injured four Surry County residents when a car was pushed over the side for about 130 feet. Sherman McCloud and Paul McCloud face charges including hit and run and no brakes after their car struck the Whitaker vehicle.

Retired Lowgap Farmer Hodges Dies at 83
Alexander Franklin Hodges 83, a retired farmer of Lowgap route 1, died at 5 45 p.m. in Dobson Emergency Hospital after a stroke. Born November 22, 1872 in Surry County, he was a Beulah Methodist Church member. Survived by wife Dolly Hall, two sons Elmer Hodges and Eldridge Hodges, ten grandchildren, and one brother Fred Hodges. Funeral Monday at Beulah Church ten miles west of Mount Airy conducted by Revs D D and J Sydney care.

Hail Damages Crops Around White Plains Area
A Friday storm dropped hail near White Plains damaging tobacco and corn across about one mile by half a mile near Johnson Boxwood Farm on Siloam road. Over twenty minutes produced more than an inch of rain and one farmer swept two bushels of hail from his porch. Tobacco crops faced likely total loss if grown.

Coroner says William A. McHone 45 of Woodruff Street died of a heart ailment after a crash at Inman’s Store on Wards Gap Road Sunday evening. He failed to stop, drove into a ditch, and died at 8 45 p.m. Survivors include wife Ernie Ayers Boyd McHone and one son Jeffrey. Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. Oakdale Cemetery burial.
