Proposal to operate two ungraded schools in Surry County has been submitted to the U S Office of Education. Dr Swanson Richards states the project aims to redeploy the school staff to expedite the teaching learning process.
Police Chief E V Marion reports about 200 Mount Airy car owners have not bought city tags. Deadline was February 16. Penalty 85. Tags sold at the water and tax office on Moore Avenue. Process in the Lower and Middle School.
Fourteen Surry County youths will attend the 1967 American Legion Boys State at Wake Forest next week. Students, their schools, and sponsors include Gilmer Robertson and Charlie David Poole from Mount Airy High with Kiwanis Club and First National Bank. David Graves and Samuel Freeman from Mount Airy High with Workmens Federal Savings and Surry Central. and others from North Surry and Surry Central with local businesses, banks, and civic groups supporting the trip.
Bil T. Stanley, a well known figure from Mount Airy now in Winston Salem, will serve as sales manager for Slate Motor Company in the local area.
A. B. Carter of the Mount Airy Development Corp says cable TV will be in use by year’s start after FCC approval. Mount Airy Cablevision, Inc. will build a 480 foot antenna and serve a 12 mile radius with a $5 monthly fee and 5 percent city gross receipts.
A second bill to permit a vote on merging Jonesville and Ariington in Yadkin County was introduced by Rep. Jeter L. Haynes. The Merritt bill advanced in the House and faces Senate action. Haynes planned to challenge it if present.
Market report shows 380 animals sold Wednesday at Mount Airy Livestock Market with quotations for hogs and cattle. Top hogs bring 21.86. heavy top hogs 29.60. sows 16.50. Calves peak at 31 with heavy top 29.88. heifers 17 to 21.50. cows 13.25 to 19.75. steers 20.50 to 21.35. bulls around 21.
Oakdale Knitting Corp opens bids for a major facility expansion at Mount Airy Industrial Park aiming to add 60 000 sq ft manufacturing and new offices. Low base bid is $669 639 by T C Brittain Co. The project will double the workforce from 230 over two years. Chester Barber president Tolle Barber sales manager Paul Shay comptroller named.
Surry Community College calls for sealed bids to asphalt the campus drives and parking areas as part of the original construction project. Bids open at 2 30 p m June 29 in the president John Krepick office. A performance bond of 4 1060 percent is required.
Hundreds of area residents will tour the new Surry Community College buildings on US 601 one mile south of Dobson during an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Faculty, trustees, President J. John Krepick, and several students will lead tours and answer questions.
L. C. Belton told police he returned to his Virginia Street shoe shop at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and found a torn window screen and an unfastened night latch. An initial check showed nothing apparently missing.
Rockford Street School will host the summer Head Start program for Mount Airy schools, sponsored by four county Community Action Agency and Yadkin Economic Development District Inc. Police report notes a broken window at the Blue Ridge Insurance Agency on Main Street. Investigators say a soft drink bottle was thrown through a glass plate during the night and the case remains under inquiry.
A fried chicken supper will be held at the South Westfield Community Building on Saturday from 5 to ? p.m. sponsored by the South Westfield Ruritan Club.
Catos Major, a Main Street retailer for over twenty years, will move into the Old Rose Building beside Farees Inc. Work crews start early next week for extensive remodeling. The space will grow from 1,000 to 6,000 square feet with a redesigned main floor for sales and additional basement space. The store will broaden to include clothing, apparel, and shoes for all ages, and continues its tradition of customer satisfaction and trusted buyers attending national fashion marts.
