Graham Wins Surry County Democratic Primary Lead

Surry County voters boosted Sandy Graham to a large county lead in the Democratic primary with Hoey second and Dr. McDonald third. Graham received 3335 votes, Hoey 1399, McDonald 1276, while McRae had 14. Hancock led Bailey ally results with 4318 for Hancock and Allison James trailing.

Man 73 Found Dead in Blacksmith Shop Near Ararat

Pinkney Armstrong of Ararat station was found slumped in his blacksmith shop on Thursday morning. Sheriff and coroner ruled heart attack, noting no warning signs and glasses off on the work bench. He had dined with J. J. Simmons the day before and lived alone, one of the last of his name in the area.

Mr and Mrs Hugh Holcomb and children left for a two week tour to Chicago and other midwestern sites. Hugh followed Dr McDonald’s governor race from Windsor Canada where a greeting card hinted at sending him a McDonald dairy farm as if to relocate to the British Empire.

Youth Killed In Collision In Coalwood

Lansford McMillian a twelve year old of Coalwood Virginia died in a train auto crash in that town last Wednesday He was riding with a friend who lost control of the car and collided with a train He died several hours after being taken to a Welch hospital his body brought to The Hollow for burial at Willow Hill Moravian Church certificates indicate funeral details from Willow Hill Church and cemetery.

North Carolina Club Federation to Host Institute at UNC

The North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs will hold a club institute at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill June 18 19 with Mrs Josephine Junkin Doggett directing. The event aims to train club women for efficient service in any capacity and invites all members. Rates are 75 cents for the first night and 50 cents thereafter with campus cafes offering meals off site. Prof Maddrey will lead club press and publicity writings with Tom Best assisting. Haymore Executors Sell Three Stores on Main Street

W C McKinney bought from A V West and J W Lovill, executors of R L Haymore estate, three Main Street store buildings for 37 thousand dollars. Proceeds pay debts contracted since Haymore's death including a Mountain Park school deal. school relinquished claim in return for debt settlement.

Surry Democrats Head to Raleigh for State Convention

A large group of Surry County Democrats travels to Raleigh for the State Convention with sessions Friday. County Chairman A. D. Folger, manager of Sandy Graham's operation in the state, remains in Raleigh hospital and cannot attend or handle delegation matters for several days. Many delegates plan to visit Folger while also representing Surry County's interests at the convention.

High Point Surgeon Dr John T Burrus Dies at 59

Dr John T Burrus longtime High Point surgeon and former state senator from Guilford county died at his home Monday afternoon. He was 59 and had been ill since Sunday. He served as chief of staff at Burrus Memorial Hospital and led a life of medical service and public involvement. Funeral services were held at the home. Burial followed in High Point.

Dr. Dobbins Closes City Meeting At First Baptist

Dr Gaines Dobbins wrapped up two weeks of services at the First Baptist Church with a sermon and baptismal service. Twenty four were baptized and thirty six joined the church during the meetings. Dobbins left for Louisville Ky to resume duties as financial manager of the Seminary and college. A $300 free will offering was taken at the services.

Bids Sought To Extend Lowgap Road Near Wesley York Farm

The state highway commission advertised bids to extend 1.8 miles of Lowgap road from the Wesley York farm area toward Lowgap. Funds are set aside for the project though officials will only extend the short stretch to not quite two miles at this time.

Mrs. Frank Collins Hurt In Auto Accident

Mrs. Frank Collins sustained injuries in an auto crash while traveling with DeWitt Anthony who held the right of way. Bent fenders and minor damages were reported to the vehicles and the case was settled out of court.

Fire destroys Blizard Express Co building in city center

A blaze at Blizard Motor Express Co in the central business district damaged the garage and destroyed twenty vehicles and cargo valued at about fifty to sixty thousand dollars. The fire started around 2 30 am from a short circuit in a new Packard owned by J H Gwyn and spread despite delayed alarms. The incident also destroyed Textile Outlet Stores stock and damaged nearby properties. insurers covered part of the loss as Wade C Moody plans replacement work and future changes to the site.
