Three Democrats Win City Office With Small Write-In Support

In Mondays city election three Democratic nominees won seats the votes show William H. Johnson 437 for commissioner at large Walter A. Poore 266 ward two commissioner and A B Withers 220 ward one commissioner Poore was reelected and all winners take office July 5 The total votes were 519 with 236 in Ward 1 and 283 in Ward 2.

Howard Pruitt Training With Unit In Germany

Army Pvt. Howard L. Pruitt Jr. of Mount Airy lives at 606 Spring Street and serves with the 2nd Armored Division in Germany. He trains as a message center clerk in the 1142nd Armored Signal Company as part of the U S Seventh Army. Pruitt entered the Army in September 1954 after graduating Mount Airy High School in 1954 and completing basic training at Camp Gordon Georgia.

Mrs J C Coe Dies After Prolonged Illness

Cora Eliza Coe 74 of 239 East Elm Street died Saturday en route to Winston Salem hospital after weeks in serious condition. Born November 26, 1880 in Carroll County Virginia, she was daughter of Lewis and Jane Sechrist. Survived by husband J C Coe two sons Arvil Coe Mount Airy and W P Harrison Bassett Virginia four daughters Mrs Carl Blizzard Mrs McKinley Overby Mrs Elvin Parker and Mrs Foy Midkin. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday Epworth Methodist Church Mount Airy North Carolina burial in church cemetery.

Rites Held For Former Resident Betty Jones 83

Mrs. Betty Jones aged 83 of Mocksville Route 1 died Thursday at her daughter’s home in Mount Airy. Born March 19 1872 in Carroll County Virginia she was the daughter of Albert and Liza Surratt. Surviving include two daughters four sons two stepdaughters a stepson two brothers and a sister with funeral services planned at Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church near Mount Airy conducted by Elders Joe Boyles and Jim Gentry followed by burial in the McCraw cemetery.

Surry Man Qualifies With Machine Gun

Army Cpl. Benjamin P. Surratt of Mount Airy qualified as expert in firing the US calibre submachine gun in Berlin. He is a mechanic with the 6th Infantry Regiment Tank Company, entered the Army in 1951, last stationed at Fort Hood and arrived in Europe last December.

Mount Airy Man Joins ROTC At Carolina

Mount Airy native Lt. Howard W. Childress USN reports for duty with the Naval ROTC unit at the University of North Carolina. A veteran of 18 years, he was commissioned from the ranks during World War II aboard the carrier Enterprise in the Pacific. He earned the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with 15 battle stars.

50-Bed Hospital At Hillsville Under Discussion

Hillsville considers a nonprofit 50 bed hospital with land donation from an anonymous local family. Dr. J. H. Early and Dr. E. P. Good outline the plan. A countywide meeting is scheduled June 10 at 7 30 p m in the Hillsville courthouse to gauge interest.
