Quality Mills gave a Christmas bonus totaling 51970.00 using two dollar bills. The company doubled last year's rate to 2 percent for active employees and 1 percent for those on leave, with the 2 percent matching about a full week’s pay. President John E. Woltz announced the bonus and noted plans for continued progress.
Carolyn Pyles, a 12 year old from Mount Airy, has Bright's disease and kidney complications. The 1965 March of Dimes poster girl for Surry County, chosen for merit and need, faces a last Christmas for comfort care as doctors offer no cure. Local groups raise funds to help with medicines and comfort as her family endures a difficult holiday season.
Deputies Boggs and East charged Robert Akers with possession of nontax paid liquor for sale after a raid on his Dobson home. A 16 year old son smashed a car window and fled with jugs found in the Ford. The case set for Dobson Recorder's Court on December 29.
The United States Post Office will close only for Christmas on Saturday December 25. Special delivery letters and packages and routine box service will be offered that day. The office will close again on January 1 for New Year’s holiday.
Funeral services for William Bender 75 of Canadensis Pa father of Mrs Ray Troutman of this city were held at the Canadensis Moravian Church. Ray Bender died Friday after six months of declining health. The Troutman couple were summoned to Pennsylvania for the illness and death and plan to stay several more days. The Mount Airy drivers license office will be closed Monday for Christmas and reopen Tuesday. The Pilot Mountain license office will be closed Friday December 24.
Arriving just after midnight Tuesday a masked gunman robbed the Drive-In Cafe on Short Town Hill. He forced manager George Gallop into the cooler, rifled the cash register and escaped. Gallop was locked in the 35 degree room but unharmed. Police and owner Dallas Houston were notified.
All schools in the county and Mount Airy city schools close for Christmas holidays. Vacation continues until Monday January 3 when classes resume. Officials say the systems are on schedule with no days lost to bad weather.
A robbery at a cafe left Gallop with a head wound and an estimated cash loss between 300 and 400 dollars. A manager recalled the suspect but could not identify him. Officers noted no vehicle sounds and believe the gunman may have walked from a nearby parked car. Deputies Monroe Boggs and Dallas Coe led the investigation with further inquiries ongoing.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Mount Airy for two days next week. It will be stationed at the Reeves YMCA on Tuesday and Wednesday, shifting from the previously reported Monday and Tuesday. Citizens are urged to donate a pint to replenish depleted supplies at the Charlotte Regional Blood Center.
Mount Airy city offices will end normal business at noon Friday and reopen Monday morning. Essential services including fire police and maintenance will operate through the holiday weekend.
The NEWS will close from noon Thursday until Tuesday morning eight a.m. to give staff time off for Christmas. No issue will be published Tuesday December 28. Normal publication resumes with the issue on December 30. The paper omits one Christmas issue so staff may rest after a busy fall season.
The Lutheran church will hold a Christmas service at 7 50 Sunday evening in the Trinity Episcopal Church building on North Main Street. The program includes candle lighting carol singing and meditation. Pastor Rev. Gerald Wise invites the public to attend.

Virgil Jones and Jesse Jones named masters of Renfro Lodge No 691 AF and AM and Granite Lodge No 322, respectively, at January installations. Both men long‑time Masons from Granite City and White Plains, with families and careers noted. Other officers elected at Renfro Lodge include E V Marion senior warden and Peter F Bondurant junior warden while Granite Lodge adds Elbert Williams senior warden Reid Stewart junior warden Pete Webster treasurer and Fay Clark secretary.
Mrs. Judith Anna Griffith Pratt 44 of Pomona California formerly of Surry County died Friday in California. The funeral was held at 2 PM Wednesday at Westfield Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Ale Donald G. O'Neal and Mrs. O'Neal of Albuquerque New Mexico visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. J C O'Neal in Dobson during the Christmas holidays.
