Draft quota set at 75 for pre-induction exams

Mrs. Carl Folger of the Surry Local Board 87 announced from the Dobson office that Surry County received a quota of 75 men for the January 9 pre-induction examinations in Charlotte. The December 28 call-up has been raised to 75, with indications of heavy call-ups for 1951 and likely early use of the 21 year old bracket.

Larceny Case Bound Over By Mon Court

In Recorder's Court Judge H H Llewellyn sent the trial of A J McCraw and Haustin Jessup for larceny and receiving tied to last Wednesday and Friday's thefts at W K Canter's store near Mt Airy on Highway 601 to the January Superior Court session. McCraw bound over to $1,000 bond. Jessup held as material witness with $500 bond. The state cites blood on merchandise and around a broken window and McCraw's recent hand cut as parallel evidence.

Mrs Wes Midkiff Breaks Foot in Floor Furnace Fall

A home accident last Saturday left Mrs Wes Midkiff with a broken foot and bruises after she stepped through an opening in a floor furnace while Mr Midkiff was repairing the unit with the grill removed. She recuperates at her Bannertown home.

Bomber Saved Through Early Morning Fix by Sgts Gordon and Hillis

Sgt Thomas Gordon DF operator at Shaw AFB aided a B 50 bomber returning from a long flight. With 18 000 feet undercast and three hours fuel, Gordon joined Hillis in a first fix at 0220 after Hillis called the pilot. The two airmen guided the plane toward Hunter Air Field.

Local Men Injured In Saturday Wreck

Calvin Junior Bowman and Paul Burnett Quesinberry, both of Mount Airy, were injured around 9 45 p m Saturday when Bowman's car veered off Highway 80 West and overturned into a Fisher River branch near Bottoms. Bowman had hip injuries and a scalp wound. Quesinberry suffered a cut above the left eye. No charges were filed. Officers cited a possible steering failure.

Alfred G. Jones 76 a farmer of Mount Airy Route 5 died Friday at his home after an extended illness born February 18 1874 in Carroll County Virginia son of Sam and Lena Edwards Jones Funeral services were at 2 p m Sunday at the home burial followed in the family cemetery Survivors include his wife former Miss Mary Cagle three sons McKinley Edgar Larkin four daughters and many grandchildren Also survived by one brother two sisters and other relatives

Half Brothers Meet In Korean Campaign

Two half brothers from Mount Airy met in Korea near Seoul while serving in the U S Army. Master Sergeant Leo J. Riggs and Pfc Billy Thompson, sons of Mr and Mrs Ed Thompson of Welch Street, exchanged letters and spent about three hours together as Riggs’ unit retreated before Chinese and Northern Korean forces.

Local Man Fined in Hillsville on Liquor Count

Leroy Morrison a Hillsville taxi driver was fined 120 dollars after appearing before Carroll County Trial Justice Court on charges of illegal possession and transportation of whiskey.

Marvin Ellis Dies Thursday Morning Here

Marvin Ellis 67 former acting postmaster and retired Mount Airy post office clerk died at Martin Memorial Hospital at 9 am after a heart attack at home. Funeral at 10:30 am Saturday on South Main Street with Rev. A C Waggoner officiating. Burial Oakdale Cemetery. He was born August 15 1883 in Johnson County and moved to Mount Airy 40 years ago to work for Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad. He retired August 31 1949 after 35 years with the post office. Survivors include his widow Rosa Satterfield two daughters Mrs Dan M Ellis Jr of Miami Springs Florida and Mrs Russell P Hale of Greensboro one grandson and brother Wade H Ellis of Smithfield.

Parsons Father Of Mrs Ramey Dies In Virginia

Joseph Bamney Parsons seventy of Mouth of Wilson Virginia died at Martin Memorial Hospital at 1 a m Thursday from a heart ailment. He had been admitted Sunday. He was husband of Mrs Parsons and father of Mrs Earl Ramey of this city. He leaves five daughters and five sons. Funeral arrangements were incomplete yesterday.

Walter Rawley Dies in California

James Walter Rawley, age 67 and a Mount Airy native, died Monday in Hawthorne California where he had lived for years. A Masonic funeral will be held in Hawthorne Friday. He leaves a wife two daughters a son two sisters Frances Rawley of Winston-Salem and Mrs Elbert Jarvis of Auburn Nebraska and a brother Albert Rawley of Orlando Florida.

Jail Break Attempt Smashed By Local Police Department

Mount Airy police halted a jail break by Bruce Ray McLane 23 of Concord NC who was wanted in a Los Angeles car theft. McLane and hitchhiker Howard Dalton 28 of Logan OH were arrested after a high speed downtown chase. An attempted escape, car theft ties, and a fire in the cell block ended with officers firing a shot as the incident concluded.

Russell Easter Hurt In Thursday Car Accident

Piper Gap Raid Seizes 100 Gallon Still Near Zion Church

Deputies Roy Smith and Paul Dead-Eye Monday with Sheriff Jackson raided a Piper Gap site near the Virginia line and Zion Church after a Saturday afternoon raid. They destroyed over 300 gallons of home brew, confiscated a steam still, and made no arrests. The operation was located about five miles west of Mount Airy and evidence indicated rye whiskey production.
