Dr Moir 8 Martin president of Workmen's Federal Savings and Loan Association announced a 4 percent dividend for the six months ending December 31 1955. He said the total dividends for 1955 will be about 275000 to savers an increase of 15 percent over 1954 and the largest payout in the history of the association.
A 1955 leaf survey invites tobacco farmers in Surtry County to report total yield and value per variety. Cards mailed to selected growers urge accurate completion and return to the County Agent's office. All responses are requested to ensure county and state results reflect true performance, with county, belt, and state summaries to follow.
Mrs. Robert M. Smith and daughter Shannon join Mr and Mrs J S Bray and Mr and Mrs J R Bray and Mr and Mrs Vance Hallman at the Christmas opera Amahl and the Night Visitors in Reynolds Auditorium Winston-Salem. The performance is by Winston-Salem Operetta Association and Winston-Salem Symphony, sponsored by the Arts Council.
Fire Chief J Ed Brannock urges Christmas safety to prevent Yule season fires. Precautions include using small trees, outdoor storage, cool placements, checked lights, UL labeled cords, fireproof ornaments, no electric trains under trees, prompt disposal of needles, and not leaving lights unattended. Approximately 50 dolls dressed by city ladies are on display in the Workmen's Federal Savings and Loan Association window. The Salvation Army will distribute the dolls to deserving children at Christmas. A first prize will be awarded to the lady with the most attractively dressed doll.
Dr Kenneth Goodson district superintendent of Winston-Salem Methodist churches was guest speaker at the Mount Airy Club meeting held Tuesday noon at the Blue Ridge Hotel. He was introduced by Rev Walter Lee Lanier with Rev Clyde Faulkner and Rev Gibson also present as guests. He spoke on the Christmas Season.
Mrs. Carole Shupe a former resident will appear on the television program Wide Wide World sponsored by General Electric Sunday evening over WSJS TV at 4 p.m. The feature from The Singing Family by Jean Ritchie includes her husband Hugo Shupe and their Kentucky Tennessee mountain kin. The Shupes now live in Michigan.
Tar Heel car owners will have valid plates until mid February 1956 under a revised schedule. New tags go on sale January 3 through February 15, with enforcement for delinquents starting February 16. Tags available at Merritt's Hardware in Mount Airy and at Raleigh MV headquarters. Renewal cards to be mailed December 27.
The Possum and Chitterlin Club at the Blue Ridge Hotel hosted its semi annual event with 150 members and guests from several states. Members praised the feast featuring 33 opossums 47 rabbits four coons 180 pounds of chitterlin and other fare. Weldon Inman led as long time president for the 24th anniversary. First prize eater was J S McCollum of Oakdale Street, with Frank Spencer of Winston-Salem second and E L Rufty of Salisbury third.
J Hale Yakley announced the Littl Symphony of the North Carolina Symphony Society will give two children’s concerts in Mount Airy on March 28 at 10 30 a m and 1 30 p m. Officials from Chapel Hill welcomed the return while PTA Council sponsors pair. The plan includes forming a Symphony Chapter in Mount Airy in spring to launch a membership drive and arrange a 1957 tour including an evening adult concert.
Bray's Mill in Mount Airy traces its origin to December 15, 1915, when J. S. Bray and his father James R. Bray began Granite City Mills. The firm expanded with an ice plant, a modern feed mill, and new equipment, shipping products to California, Washington, Colorado, and New York, processing about 50,000 bushels of local grain annually.
A 19 year old Virginia man Gaither McMillon of Cloudville was injured when his northbound car left N. CC Highway 103 and overturned in a side ditch about 9 p.m. He was taken by ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem with facial cuts and a lost tooth. State patrolman William Blankenship said the car sustained about $600 damage and the man was alone in the vehicle.
Frank Jones, funeral director of Jones Funeral Home in Mount Airy and Dobson, was elected secretary and treasurer of the Morticians Society of the Eighth District in North Carolina at a Lexington meeting. The district covers Mount Airy and areas from Winston-Salem to Statesville. he will take office in February. A grand opening for the Dobson funeral home is set for December 21, with assistant manager Wilfred Moser based in Dobson full time.

Mrs Eugene W Paddison of this city West Pine Street entered Duke Hospital in Durham Tuesday and underwent an operation Wednesday the report notes the procedure and location without additional details of outcome.
Frank Jones, owner of Jones Funeral Home in Mount Airy and Dobson, announced the hiring of Leland C. Crow of Mount Olive as funeral director and embalmer for Mount Airy and Elkin. Crow, a Goldsboro native with eight years’ embalming experience, is a graduate of the H. E. Dolan School of Embalming in Philadelphia, and formerly worked at Charles Stores in Mount Airy in 1939. He is married to Marian Cooke of Kinston. they have two children, Cecelia and Linda. Crow is a World War veteran.
Jack Gaddy announces two department heads for Mount Airy Chevrolet on Highway 89. Bill T. Stanley becomes safes manager with seven years in auto trade. P J Hudson is used car manager with 23 years in the business. Stanley praised for opening a strong showroom in Detroit. Hudson brings long experience to the used car division.
The Mount Airy Life Underwriters Association met at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Hunt Room of the Blue Ridge Hotel. Steve Osborne of Security Life and Trust Company and Anthony Payne of World Insurance spoke on organizing life underwriters. Officers elected: Charlie Shelton president, Worth Haynes secretary and treasurer, Carl Stow first vice president in charge of membership, Bill Campbell second vice president in charge of program. Twenty four local men attended representing eight companies.
An II veteran describes service in the Navy in the South Pacific. He notes his ship was sunk by a Japanese action, caused by the plane.
George W Martin, 80, died Wednesday morning in a Richmond hospital after lasting injuries from an accident at a Poplar Camp roller mill. He was nearly an invalid for 26 years following skull fracture while adjusting machinery. Surviving are eight sons and a daughter, plus two brothers and two sisters. Funeral set for Friday in Roanoke Oakley Chapel with interment Evergreen Cemetery.
