Mount Airy decks Main Street with Laurel roping and electric lights as stores showcase a full holiday merchandise line. Santa visits appear in many shops, and The News will publish children's letters to Santa to celebrate the season and sustain belief.
The combined choirs of Hawley will present Christmas Cantata "The Christ Child" Sunday at 5 PM in Central Methodist Church. The chorus of fifty to sixty members is directed by Rev. E. T. Mickey Jr the Moravian pastor. A silver offering will help cover production costs.
John C. Minick, son of J D Minick of this city, works in General Electric Co engineering at Erie Pennsylvania. He notes improving business with strong locomotive orders for the Pennsylvania Railroad and a second large order in the works. A New York Central turbine electric locomotive is under consideration at about half a million dollars with a steam boiler turbine and generator to power axle motors. It is expected to surpass current locomotive efficiency.
A stubborn blaze burned the roof off the home of R. J. Gallaway on Main Street last Thursday night. Firefighters answered after midnight. the house and furnishings suffered water damage and only partial insurance coverage is reported. The Gallaways currently reside in rooms at Mrs. C. C. Haymore’s home.
Mayor E C Ashby announced two more CWA projects Worth street grading graveling and oil treating and West Poplar street with 80 men to be hired. County projects include Sheltontown road 69 men and Piper Gap road 62 men bringing county employment near 700 as programs expand.
Dexter Allen of Wards Gap was found guilty of manslaughter in Carroll County court last week. The jury sentenced him to two years in the penitentiary after he was charged with shooting Sam Dawson to death.
Mr and Mrs C W Fulton have moved back to the city and leased Dr R G Mitchells Cherry street home. Fulton formerly operated a local Ford agency and plans to start a new business soon.
Virginia Highway Commission plans to tear down the old covered bridge on Hillsville Road over Little Reed Island Creek and replace it with a concrete span. Large trucks have struggled through, sometimes unloading to pass, prompting a detour via the Galax road. Plans await property rights clearances, with traffic relief cited as the goal.
Hundreds attended the formal opening of Mount Airy's Rose's 5 10 and 25 cent store as 50+ staff unpacked and displayed merchandise. Executives from the main office and other locations praised the Mount Airy store as among the most handsome in the chain of 68 stores.
Miss Edna Ellis and Mr Russell Hale announce their engagement in a family gathering hosted by Mrs M Ellis. The couple will marry at the Ellis home on December twenty sixth, with Miss Ellis teaching in the Mount Airy school system and Mr Hale connected to George K Hale Manufacturing Co. Detailed bridal gifts and celebration marked the event.
Miss Mary Culler and John Rauscher were married last Friday at Holy Angel Catholic Church in a ceremony conducted by Father Adler. Both are known in the community with many friends. Rauscher recently moved to the city and works at the mirror plant.
Deputy Webb tracked stolen Christmas goods found near Houston Town on Fancy Gap road. Oscar Jones, 23, approached the goods and shot Webb in the toe with an army pistol before escaping into the woods. Authorities have searched for Jones with no success.
Funeral rites were held Sunday at Mountain Park Baptist Church for Mrs. DeEtte Kapp Haynes 50 who died Saturday in Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Elkin after rupture of appendix. She leaves son John Alfred Haynes 19 daughter Mary Chase Haynes 15 and her aged mother. She was a longtime Baptist Church member and widow of Frank M. Haynes. Burial followed beside her father and sister in church cemetery. A Sister Mary Kapp Wallace had died previously. In Westfield Township C C Arrington’s large frame house burned Wednesday afternoon. insurance coverage is reported.
An organizing committee of Blue Ridge counties from Roanoke to Boone will push rights of way for a 450 mile scenic highway. Engineers review routes while data on mountain scenery is gathered. elevation must be at least 1800 feet and the road not join existing highways. Prominent attendees included Gov. R A Coughton and Sen. Taylor Vaughn at Hillsville meeting led by Judge W D Tomkins.
A Christmas program will be held Thursday morning at nine at North Main School chapel with Mrs P L Johnsons seventh grade and other seventh and two sixth graders in a pageant. At 3:30 Thursday a program by primary grades follows. Friday at 11 all pupils will attend a Christmas tree with treats and gifts for the neglected representing a schoolwide holiday event.
Knights Templar held their annual officer election in the Masonic temple Tuesday night following an oyster banquet. Plans include a Christmas service in full uniform with a musical program and a sermon by a selected minister. Elected officers include W. M. Johnson as Commander and W. E. Merritt Jr. as Generalissimo, along with several wardens, a prelate, treasurer, and guards.
The News reports unsettled weather slowing hog slaughter but noting several large hogs. Abe Edwards of Salem killed a 511 pound dressed hog, while Will Davis near Antioch on Lowgap road exhibits a giant hog possibly weighing about 1008 pounds. Prank Holder, a top county hog raiser, killed four hogs totaling 2,000 pounds and harvested 400 bushels of corn from six acres. He also irrigates hay and credits lespedeza as a cover crop.
Robert Powell aged five of Pilot Mountain died in Martin Memorial Hospital after an operation for ruptured appendix. He was a freshman at Pilot Mountain High School. Four classmates and four cousins served as flower bearers at services held in Pilot Mountain and Shoals Baptist Church with interment in the local cemetery. Surviving are his parents Mr. and Mrs. Lee Powell and three sisters Mrs. Jack Bean and Misses Mildred and Norene Powell of Pilot Mountain.
Policeman Joe Snow has been sidelined since November 28 by a back injury while helping a friend load a vehicle. He is now able to be out and about again.
The treasury department invites bids for a Galax post office site with 90 feet street frontage and 12 500 square feet. Site cost capped at 8 000 dollars, building cost over 50 000 dollars. Previous Mount Airy project spent 25 000 for site and about 130 000 for building and fixtures.
The First Baptist Church hosts a Sunday school program and Christmas tree on Friday night at 7 30. Mrs Fred L Johnson directs a Christmas pageant with the junior choir singing carols. Santa Claus is invited to attend and distribute gifts after the program to all Sunday school members. The public is invited to attend.
Mr and Mrs Ed Gardner hosted a six o'clock dinner at their North Main Street home last Sunday. Guests included Rev Carl Looney of Hillsville Virginia and Mrs Laura Mitchell of this city. Rev Looney serves as pastor of Hillsville Methodist Church.
