Children’s pleas to Santa reveal simple wants such as candy oranges socks and a new dress. The Empty Stocking drive in THE NEWS gathers support to ensure every stocking is filled this Christmas with reader contributions acknowledged next week.
Fortunate friends of W. E Merrit Jr attended an old time rabbit supper at Renfro Cafeteria Monday night. Merritt and Renfro Mills foremen hunted Saturday and brought back over 20 rabbits. Arthur Lawrence directed dressing and cooking, serving in palatable fashion to guests including Ha rocket Whannock Red Worrell M Pinch C C Carroll Ed Claugh Speight W B Woodruff Haywood Merritt AM.
A notice directs veterans to contact Mr Prank Hines or Chief R E F Lawrence to join a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp around January 1 and to arrange the application to be in line.
In Surry and Alleghany Counties Truman Woodruff's fishing exploits were captured on moving pictures. Florida tarpon battles were shown at Longap Tuesday night by W. E. Merritt Jr and W D Merritt with color scenes from a U S tour. The event, held at the shirt factory, charged no admission and drew a large audience.
Henry Alfred Badgett former resident died at his home in Winston-Salem on Thursday afternoon from pneumonia. About 40 years old he was a tobacco buyer for Liggett and Myers Tobacco Co. He lived here seven years as a local market buyer. He was son of the late Dr James F Badgett and Mrs Nannie Cobb Badgett. Survived by wife Virginia Lee Hodges and two sons Henry A Badgett Jr and William F Badgett of Winston-Salem and one sister Mrs Van Daniels of Caswell County.
Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Atkinson of Siloam celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with relatives and friends expected to attend in Sur ry County. Elder and Mrs. WH Atkinson of Round Peak attend. Atkinson family includes 3 sons and 2 daughters, 24 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren. ages 85 and 87.
Thos C Harrell liquidating agent of the Bank of Mount Airy reports the sale of the old bank building now used by Duke Power Co. to W C McKinney for 13500 cash. McKinney takes possession December 1. The Main Street parcel measures 25 by 79 feet and faces future leaseholds until August next. The Franklin Street corner property remains unsold with several potential buyers named.
The Mount Airy tobacco market will hold its last sales session before Christmas on Friday December 13. Last week 295825 pounds sold for 9049505 dollars at an average 17.0 cents per pound. The season average is 20.40 with 4900782 pounds sold. Good grades are in demand. Emma Norman of Route 6 widow of Preston Norman died last Friday at age 91 after illness.
A miniature Nativity scene decorates the Blue Ridge Clothing Co window on Martin Street. Mary Joseph and the Babe with wise men shepherds and animals are arranged in a stable scene illuminated at night. Palm trees moss hills and long leaf pine create a realistic backdrop with a large star overhead and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year sign.
Mount Airy High School prepares to host Leaksville High School on Tuesday night for boys and girls basketball openers. A second game is planned for Thursday with tentative opposition including Pranklin, with possible adjustments to the schedule.
The wedding of Frances Fawcett and Frank Sydnor took place at Trinity Episcopal Church with a large turnout. The ceremony featured Rev. F. M. Winborne, organist Mrs. Bailey Glenn, and soloist Mrs. Rebecca Hines, followed by a reception hosted by the bride’s mother Mrs. G. D. Fawcett at their North Main Street home. The couple will reside with the bride’s mother after a New York City honeymoon.
On Monday night Mount Airy school children led by Mice Frelen Coleman will begin twilight carol singing on weekdays. They will look for lighted windows and candles for directions, visiting routes on Monday through several local streets.
