Mount Airy residents back the Empty Stocking Fund aimed at Christmas aid for about 1500 local children. The committee led by Geo W Sparger Jr and Ed F Gardner seeks $1000, reporting $161 already contributed and promising weekly acknowledgments through The News.
A Carnival at Rockford Street School auditorium Friday at 7:30 P M, sponsored by the school PTA. Admission 10 cents for adults and 5 cents for children. Features include a Book Parade with children’s book or character representations, fish pond, fortune telling, doll show, welfare and confectionary booths, a men’s booth, and side shows charging one or two cents.
Miss Alice Ashby Schaub and James Weldon Pell wed at home of Dr and Mrs J T Smith in Westfield. The groom, a clerk at Jackson Bros Department Store, and the bride, a Mount Airy High School graduate, plan to reside on White Sulphur Springs road after a Durham Ra letah honeymoon.
Automobile tags for 1936 go on sale at the Motor Club branches December 15 with Surry Sales Co. as selling agent in Mount Airy. D C Lewis and Davis Smith attended an agents meeting in Raleigh to learn handling procedures. Two classes of tags with price cut to 49 cents per hundred pounds of car weight. Minimum fee for cars up to 2000 pounds is $8.00. above 2000 pounds pricing 5 cents per hundred for each hundred of fraction. No extension of time after January first.
The county reports of large hog slaughters as farmers kill and butcher porkers. P W Rices of Dobson killed two hogs weighing 882 pounds and produced 12 cwt of lard. F E Marion of Rhoals reported three hogs totaling 1390 pounds. Johnnie Collins of Dobeon killed one hog at 528 pounds and H L Thomas of route six Mount Airy killed one weighing over 500 pounds.
Roy Wilson age 35 and Lioyd Thomas age 19, both of Pilot Mountain, were knocked unconscious in a pickup wreck on the Pilot-Wreetfield road Tuesday night and lay by the road for over ten hours before being found. They suffered head and chest injuries and a broken left arm, then were taken to Martin Memorial Hospital where they are reported to be recovering.
G W Thomas 58 a Basem Church district resident broke his left leg Thursday morning after tripping on a Willow Street porch step. He has been crippled since infancy and was taken to Martin Memorial hospital for treatment.
A general meeting of the Mount Airy Women’s Club will be held in the Community Building Friday at 3 30 o'clock. All members are urged to be present. The program will be in charge of home talent.
Rev and Mrs J L Ingram hosted a chicken dinner for church officials from all churches on his circuit at Salem Church dining room. The Woman's Missionary Society served the meal and added 10 to the treasury. The Ingrams make this an annual kickoff to plan the year’s work.
Tobacco sales are light this week as warehousemen anticipate few breaks due to cool dry weather and much of the crop already sold. Trading ends Friday for the holidays with markets closed for a month reopening January 13. Farmers still holding stock are urged to prepare and bring in crops when markets reopen in January.
Athletic letters will be presented to members of the football team at the high school Friday morning at 11 15. Those receiving this honor include Les Holyfield Jack Davis Frank Mahone Fd Jones James Marion Phillip George Wade Eldridge Joe Gwyn John FPulk Ronald Laughridge Charles Sheton Charles Mayberry George Gilbert Roscoe Stewart Irving Pendergraph Otis Alderman and Billy Robertson. The football used in the Chapel Hill game will be presented and placed in the library as a token of the state championship victory. A son Robert Oxborne Jackson Jr was born to Mr and Mrs Robert Jackson last Friday night at Martin Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Ralph J. Sykes of Jackson North Carolina has been elected health officer for Surry County and will start December 16 from the County Health Board meeting in Dobson. The appointment has state support and ensures cooperation with state officials for the county health program. He has previously served as health officer at a CCC camp in Dobson and has work experience in Richmond. He earned his medical license two years ago after completing the Medical College of Virginia. Supporting staff include Miss Mary Taylor and Mrs Ervin nurses, Miss Louise Bailey secretary, and Mrs Irene Sydnor as inventive secretary.
All circles of the Woman's Missionary Society will meet at the church on Monday December th at 2 00 PM. Officers will be elected for the coming year and every member is urged to be present.
The Washington trained post office department recommended Hazel Martin for the Dobson postmaster position after an examination. Martin, daughter of Tom Martin and niece of N. J. Martin, teaches at Little Richmond and will resign to assume duties soon. An office building will be erected on the corner lot near RC Lewellyn’s home for the quarters, replacing W. M. Jackson, who has served as postmaster for years.
Announcement by Duke Power Company that Miss Addie Malone home service specialist will lead a demonstration of household electrical appliances at the company office next Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 to 5 PM. The public is invited to attend and hear Miss Malone who has led prior demonstrations and cooking schools in the city.
Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Thomas M. Cash and Rev J A McKaughn were hurt in a Wednesday night crash on the Yadkinville highway when another car forced Cash off the road. They were treated at Baptist Hospital. McKaughn suffered more serious injuries. McKaughn is a longtime area minister. Cash has ties to Mount Airy where his son coaches a state championship football team.
The Rockford Street Parent-Teacher Association will hold a meeting Tuesday evening at 7 30 PM. The program is led by Mre PW Green Mrs Randieman and Mrs Will Jackson with a task by Miss Aiken and a patron panel discussion. Mrs T W Smith and family of Charlotte visited Delia Banner over the weekend.
Dan W. Hemmings of Dobson arrived in the county this week after spending months in Canada where he grew a crop of tobacco. Hemmings has grown tobacco in Canada for years and is undecided about returning there next spring or remaining on his Dobson area farm.
Seven year old Jimmie Hale reacts to the birth of a sister with strong preference for a boy. He declares a girl cannot play ball kick football wrestle or do anything, expressing his disappointment that a boy was not born. Maizi Ann Hale is welcomed as the newborn daughter of Mr and Mrs E P Hale.
Relatives and friends gathered for the funeral of W. W. Burke last Friday. Out of town kin include daughter Wille Taylor Burke of Washington DC and son Ed Mond Burke a Hargrave cadet. Greensboro guests Dr and Mrs Banner, Mrs W O Howard, Mrs Jack Lindsay, Ora Parker. Bristol Tennessee pair Sam Mitchell and son. Wytheville duo Charlie and Bowen Dickey. Charlotte couple Graham Holding. Winston-Salem Bob Davis. Washington DC James Burke. Roanoke VA Rev Zeb W Robertson. The Rev Robertson, a former Burke pastor, assisted at the service.
Mrs Vivian Thomas nee Miss Vivian Collins married Joe Dobson Jr at Hillsville Virginia on Wednesday October 16. Dobson is son of the late Joe Doton and is connected with a local coal company. Mrs Dobson is daughter of Marion Collins of The Hollow Virginia and attended Glade Valley.

Mrs. Eliza Phillips aged 85 died at 3 30 AM Sunday at her home in Mount Airy. Her son Wi Phillips a 65 year old nightwatchman was murdered last November 30 in the Mount Airy Knitting Mill furnace room. Gable McCraw and Hurley Holder were arrested. Holder confessed in September and is serving 2 to 30 years. McCraw’s trial then continued to February term. Interment in Zion Cemetery follows at 2 00 PM Monday.
Miss Mary Jackson and Paul Moorefield married in Wytheville Virginia on September 3. Mrs Moorefield is the younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Z A Jackson of this city. He is the son of Dr and Mrs L J Moorefield and a junior at the Dental College of the University of Maryland. The couple’s announcement surprised relatives and friends. Reverends J W Prank and his wife the returning missionaries from Japan now reside with Postmaster Joe B Sparger on Rockford street after visiting relatives and returning to America on furlough.
