Twenty two English boxwoods, about twenty five years old, were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and their daughter Maryann for planting at the First Baptist Church grounds near White Plains. Mrs. BR. Jack Way helped arrange the display with the church grounds committee.
Dr. R B C Franklin and Surry County Health Officer plan moving the Health Department into the former Martin Memorial Hospital Nurses Home on Gilmer Street. The city and county own the property after a 25 000 dollar purchase, approved by the Local Government Commission and Attorney General, with bids to be sought for remodeling ahead of a March 1 move. The 26 room facility will include a basement two floors and an attic and will host the department formerly housed above the police station.
The Lions Club will sponsor its annual dinner and Christmas party for the blind at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Reeves YMCA. The event is open to all community blind residents and their guests with ad jal on Wednesday.
Mount Airy resident Miss Louise G. Bailey was commended for her role as Christmas Seal Chairman for Surry County Tuberculosis Association. Mrs. W. T. Best, state chairman, led a 110 member team pledging public support to fund 102 TB organizations for 1956.
The Surry County Board of Education met December 5 in the Board of Education Office to address crowded conditions. Superintendent J Sam Gentry was authorized to consult Mount Airy and Elkin units on a joint plan to relieve urgent needs and add facilities. Christmas holidays run December 21 to January 2 with teachers’ vouchers issued before holidays.
Cpl. Robert Eugene Towe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Towe of Cana Virginia, has been promoted while stationed with the 12th Tank Company at Fort Richardson Alaska. He has served 18 months and recently spent a 30 day furlough with his parents.

Mount Airy council approves construction of a new jail on the second floor above the Welfare Department and Juvenile Court offices after North Carolina jail inspector E T Early cites legal and safety deficiencies. He backs a top floor jail and urges a safe, segregated facility with juvenile accommodations and a safety door for interim protection. The city plans to hire an architect, with Haywood Sparger of Marion Va consulted for design.
The Kroger store on Willow Street opens Tuesday at noon with Mayor W. F. Carter Jr. cutting the tape. The supermarket features 4,500 items, 10,000 square feet, and a parking lot for 130 cars. John Perry of Winston-Salem leads the staff with J. K. Isom as head clerk and Eugene Gravely directing produce.
Monday asked city commissioners to declare North South Street a hazard and require property owners to install sidewalks for children's safety as heavy traffic endangers students walking to school. The board plans formal action to push sidewalk construction along the route.

Mount Airy leaders P A Tyndall and G C Lovill urged the city board to extend West Oak Street to Lovills Creek with a bridge to Highway 52 to ease traffic. Commissioner A B Withers proposed widening Virginia Street with a creek bridge instead. No action was taken.
Mount Airy resident Mr. Monday told city commissioners that Dr. Henry Jordan, expected NC gubernatorial candidate, called Surry County neglected by the State Highway Department. He urged road improvements and proposed extending River Road from North Mount Airy along the Ararat River through Dr. Martin's bottom.
Donald Gardner, a student at AS TC in Boone, earned a place on the dean's list for the quarter. He is the son of Mrs. Ethel and is the brother of Donald Jr. Fostered by former Miss Ernestine Phillips, the family has one son.
The Surry District of the Boy Scouts of America won the Brenner Award, the Old Hickory Council’s top publicity honor, at its annual dinner in Winston-Salem attended by about two hundred scouters and wives. Garland Warren accepted the trophy for Surry District from W. K. Hoyte of Piedmont Publishing Company.
Mount Airy report states Police Chief Monte W. Boone was admitted to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem Monday. He underwent an operation Tuesday on two ruptured discs in his back and is expected to be released home in two to three days.
A federal grand jury in Greensboro returned true bills charging W. Guy Bondurant of Mount Airy and associates with tax violations. Bondurant faces two indictments covering individual and corporate tax shortages totaling about 110 thousand dollars for 1949 to 1952, plus separate charges for misreported company income. The panel also charged a former local contractor firm and a mortgage company manager with FHA law violations and issued more than 30 other indictments.
Surry County's first annual ASC banquet is set for December 17 in the Dobson High School cafeteria. Weldon B. Denny says the event honors committeemen and their wives for service and aims to connect business and agriculture. Attendees include 51 newly elected committeemen, existing committeemen, leading farmers, lime and fertilizer dealers, bankers, and others.
