Billy G Slate 21 son of Mr and Mrs L C Slate of this city route 4 is a patient at the U S Army Hospital in Fort Benning Ga. Slate has been hospitalized for two weeks after an operation on his leg.
Eddie R. Colbert of Mount Airy arrived at Keflavik International Airport Iceland for assignment to the Iceland Air Defense Force. The force handles air defense and maintains air-sea rescue and refueling ties for commercial and military operations.
Governor Luther Hodges will headline the annual American Legion Day at Pilot Mountain with talks at noon and 3 p.m. after a 2:30 parade. The event includes a band parade from Pilot Inn, beauty contest, band concert, barbecue, and community speakers, weather permitting at Pilot Mountain High School.
A Thursday night blaze on Wards Gap road killed about 800 pullets in a chicken house owned by Owen Sechrist. A Mount Airy firefighter reported the roof had collapsed on six week old birds. The fire site used a wood brooder for heating and the stock was insured.

H O Woltz outlines far reaching plans for a new municipal building as Mount Airy eyes a modern upgrade. The tobacco market in Mount Airy will close Friday December 9. farmers urged to bring tobaccos to town for top prices as the market reports its best season and leading sale averages in the region.
H O Woltz a prominent Mount Airy attorney and industrialist announced plans to ask the city commission to form a three or five man committee of respected local business leaders to survey city needs. The panel would study a new municipal building housing police fire tax library juvenile court and health facilities and may recommend selling the current city hall and Rockford Street library to fund the project.
Beulah in Surry County ten miles west of Mount Airy won the Long Range Farm Home and Community Improvement Program prize of 200 dollars from the Surry County Farm Bureau. Mrs. Chester Holder of Mount Airy received the award. Judges included Clayton D. Smith and others, with Salem Fork taking second and Franklin School third.
John W. Lovill aged 70 died at 10 p.m. Saturday at his home in Short town Hill route 5 Mount Airy. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church Cloudville officiated by Elders Gray Falk and Robert Rogers. Burial in church cemetery. Born Patrick County August 9 1885 son of John Robert and Mary E New Lovill. Survived by widow four daughters Mrs Neal Bowman Mrs Inez Hodge of Mount Airy Mrs Robert Elliott of Alexandria and Mrs Dean Nesler of Baltimore four sons L Lb Jd R and B E Lovill of Mount Airy and W Lovill of Whesennetl one brother Everett Amelia Va and two sisters Mrs Hettie Smith and Mrs Minnie McDowell Mayodan.
Fort Meade Maryland Sergeant Dalmar R Barker of Mount Airy and the rescue partner Dowdy of Guinea Falls Virginia saved two men from a one room house on route 175 Jessup Maryland after smoke rendered them unable to escape The building collapsed soon after both men were removed The Provost Marshal praised the actions and Barker will be recommended for an Army award The rescuer is son of Mr and Mrs S C Barker of Mount Airy route 1
Jimmie Lee Hart, 27, of North South Street, was sworn in Friday by Mayor W F Carter Jr to join the Mount Airy police force. Hart is the son of Everett and Mary Hart of Pilot Mountain and son in law of the Eads of Dobson.
Mrs. W. W. Thomas returned from an extended visit in Herndon Virginia with her sister Mrs. A. E. Steele and Steele's daughter Mrs. Charlie Rinker and Mrs. Allen Bradley all of Herndon. Friday evening the Rinker family was notified that her husband had died in a diabetic coma after a few hours illness at a hospital. Mrs. Rinker flew to Winston-Salem that night and the other visitors returned home Saturday. The Rinkers have visited Mrs. Thomas here several times and have many friends in the city.
Eugene King, 23, of Skid Row near Mount Airy, was arrested by the Sheriff's Department on a liquor and hindering officers charge. Deputies tried to enter his home with a search warrant but King reportedly poured out liquor, delaying them. He previously had a prohibition violation 12 months sentence suspended on $250. He appealed and posted $1,000 bond. Glenn Hodge posted the same for his Recorder's Court appearance.
Mr and Mrs Ed Brannock ease worries about their son Ben in Germany after receiving his Augsburg 16th Field Artillery Battalion Thanksgiving menu. Ben has gained forty pounds to 215 pounds while stationed abroad under the United States Army care.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2019 will meet at Veterans Memorial Park Thursday night at 6 30 p m. The session was moved from Friday due to Mount Airy stores opening that day. All members are urged to attend the supper meeting Thursday.

Dr Alton Brooks Freeman 51 of Randleman died at home Thursday night after years of declining health. Native of Dobson, he was son of Mrs. R C Freeman and the late Mr Freeman. Survived by wife Elizabeth Townsend, daughter Susan Elizabeth, son Alton Brooks Jr., his mother, five sisters and four brothers. Service Sunday at 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church of Randleman conducted by Rev Sherrill Biggers. Burial at Randolph Memorial Park Cemetery.
A Virginia woman practiced a new style of parking on a street left side. She parked in front of Rees Clothing Store, to southbound traffic, and left after placing a nickel in the meter. A parking meter officer issued her a ticket for illegal parking.
