In Mount Airy the Shoppers Parking, Inc. operates five downtown lots offering two to three hours free parking. The nonprofit, funded by about 50 merchants at 865 dollars monthly, has drawn many shoppers from a larger area. John Wolfe helped launch the project and Floyd Rees later became president.

Driver Flees Law in High Speed Chase and Wreck
A Rural Hall youth, Donnie Gene Westmoreland, 24, was jailed in Mount Airy after a high speed chase that topped 100 mph on US 52 north of Pilot Mountain. He wrecked on Rockford Street, fled on foot, and was captured. He faces multiple charges including speeding, reckless driving, no license, and improper vehicle registration. Mount Airy Kiwanis Club contributed over 700 dollars from this year’s park concession sales at Floyd Poore Park during seven high school football games. He was sports editor and vice president of the Stuart Enterprise and created the newspaper The Observer in Stuart. Manslaughter Charge Filed in June Traffic Death
Sanford Lee Cooke 33 of Dobson was charged Wednesday with manslaughter and driving on the wrong side of the road in the June 12 death of 17 year old Mary Sue White of route 1 Elkin. Cooke had been hospitalized since the accident and was released from Mount Airy jail after posting $2 100 bond following filing by state patrolman J B Miller.

Police Make 28 Arrests During Past Weekend
Surry County law enforcement logged 48 arrests at the Mount Airy Police Department over the weekend. Automotive regulation violations led with 28 arrests, followed by liquor offenses with 12 and other cases including assault. Mount Airy officers accounted for 26 arrests, with Surry deputies making 12 and state highway patrol 10.

Lovers Lane Home Damaged By Blaze
Bannertown volunteers responded with two fire trucks and 25 firefighters to Johnnie Shelton's Lovers Lane home around 2 40 p m Saturday. A grease fire on a kitchen range spread to the kitchen wall and ceiling, causing several hundred dollars in damage to the wall kitchen ceiling and smoke effects throughout the house. No injuries were reported.

Five Charges In 13 Hours On The Local Youth
Thomas Elwin Terry 23 of 267 E Lebanon St was cited by Patrolman D R Armstrong for improper muffler and lights at 10 45 am Sunday.
