The Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce elected three new directors for three year terms after counting ballots returned by members. New directors are Jack Greenwood Blue Ridge Enterprises G Pendergraft Lynne Hosiery and Earl Watson Spencer's Inc. Installation will occur at the January annual meeting.
The Westfield Volunteer Fire Department held its annual meeting on Monday at the fire station. New officers include President Jack George, Vice President Raeford Taylor, Secretary and Treasurer John Kuhl, and Fire Chief Frank Jessup. Assistant chiefs Graham Owens and Harry Christian. Captain Aldene Collins. First Lieutenant Raeford Taylor. Second Lieutenant J. D. Goins. New directors are Stanley Christian for a two year term and Junior Birch for one year.
The Surry Democratic Women meet at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the Agricultural Building Dobson to hear the nominating committee report and elect officers. Chairman Mrs James Wilburn of Pilot Mountain leads with Mrs Joe Folger of Dobson and Mrs Jimmy Harrell of Elkin. Hugh Merritt of Mount Airy will speak informally on reapportionment and redistricting. Cadet Jimmy Parker, son of Mr and Mrs Leonard J Parker, visited his parents before returning to Hargrave Military Academy.
Teen Mary Goins 17 of Mount Airy died when a late model Ford Mustang she rode in overturned after attempting to pass a tractor trailer on US 52 near Cana Virginia. Two male passengers survived with minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation by Virginia Trooper R D Carrico.
Two people were treated for minor injuries after a collision at the NC 88 western exit. Charles Heatherly, a News staffer, pulled into NC 89 and collided with Henry Edward Craddock and his daughter Sue in a 1958 Plymouth. Both Craddock party members were taken to Northern Surry Hospital with non serious injuries. Vehicle damage exceeded $1,000 and Heatherly was charged with failure to yield.
A federal three judge panel orders North Carolina to reapportion by January 11 or the court will redraw districts. The ruling affects 11 congressional districts 50 state senators and 120 representatives with strict population variance limits and prompts proposals to expand the House or group counties under weighted voting.
A week of fluctuating temperatures ends with a brutal cold wave. Highs ranged from 63 to 41 degrees while nights dropped to 16 to 26 degrees. The blast is part of a larger Midwest system reaching Arkansas and parts of Louisiana, with readings taken at the Mount Airy Water Plant.
Police Chief Jack Marion announced a campaign next week to eliminate stray dogs roaming Dobson at night. He advised residents with pets to keep dogs tied during that period to restore normal conditions after the strays are removed.
The funeral for Mrs Jeannette Trotter Whitman 82 of Mount Airy was held at 2 50 pm yesterday at First Presbyterian Church. She died at 3 am Wednesday in a Winston Salem nursing home. She was born in Charlotte to Alexander Graham and Lottie Lawson Trotter. Surviving are two sons Gene Whitman Winston Salem and Alex G Whitman Roselle Park NJ. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.
The Mount Airy Jaycees sponsor a country cured ham shoot on Saturday December 4 at 1 pm. The event takes place at the Jim Banner farm off highway 42. Shells are furnished for 12 16 and 20 gauge shotguns and 22 rifles.
Market report from Mount Airy Livestock Market shows top hogs at 25 dollars and calves to 31.50 with heavy top 26 and 29. Heifers 12.25 to 18.50, cows 10 to 14.75, steers 15.50 to 23.25, bulls 12.50 to 18. Heifers per head 71 to 79 dollars, cows per head 69 to 175 dollars. A heavy market with 454 animals sold.
Kathleen Thomas of route 7 Mount Airy won a bicycle in a Belk's Department Store contest conducted over the weekend. The drawing occurred Tuesday and the prize was claimed Wednesday evening.
Duke Power Co opens a Pilot Mountain branch with mayor Hilary Jo cutting the ribbon at 10 am. About 800 people visit the office, which serves as a collection station and sells appliances while handling service applications. Prize drawings award a dryer, blender, and carving knife.
