Mount Airy City Schools will start classes on Wednesday September 6. L B Pendergraph superintendent announced nine new teachers joining the staff and listed principals and teacher meeting plans for August 23 and September 5. Regular classes begin at 9 a m with first grade registration on Tuesday afternoon.
Charles Ht. Randleman who earned an LLB from Wake Forest Law School this June passed the North Carolina State Bar exam last week. He will practice law in Mount Airy and reside with his wife at 215 South Main Street.
Neil M. Smith Surry County Farm Agent announced a Tobacco Tour in Westfield on Saturday at 9 a m. The group meets at J H Burchett near Jackson's Store to study disease resistant tobacco on black shank land. At 10 a m they visit Luther Inman to learn ridge ventilation, then Boyd Owens between Westfield and Pilot Mountain to discuss disease tobacco growth on Granville Wilt identification.
The Blue Ridge Fox Hunters Club directors met Saturday to outline the annual Bench Show and Field Trials for 1950 51. The Bench Show is set for October 5 at 6 p m at Veterans Memorial Park with a members and exhibitors picnic. Field Trials will run near Dobson at daybreak October 6 and 7. Officers elected: President Joe Fowler Jr, Vice President Claude Ramey, Secretary and Treasurer Mrs J R Fowler Sr.
The Willow Street residence of H H Webb was sold to R B Armfield manager of Western Auto Store in Mount Airy. The deal was handled by agents Martin Bennett and Norman Wyche. The Armfields plan to move in about 30 days while the Webbs build a new house in Burke Development.
More than 200 relatives and friends joined a lawn dinner at a White Plains home to celebrate I. B. York of South Street on his 78th birthday. The tribute continues a 36 year tradition with 10 children, 34 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren mentioned. Rev. J. H. Daniela led the invocation.
Mrs. R. C. Monroe, former president of the Jesse B. Jones Post Unit 123 American Legion Auxiliary, urged observance of a Special Day of Prayer Sunday for American servicemen in Korea. She forwarded a request from Mrs. John A. Ward of Williamston to contact local pastors and ask churches to join in prayer for early world peace and for the boys overseas.
Mount Airy resident Dock Golding waived preliminary hearing on two counts of liquor law violation and posted a $1,000 bond for a September 18 Superior Court appearance after deputies and state troopers seized 27 gallons of white whisky and nine pints of taxpaid liquor at his home. Magistrate H. M. Foy handled the hearing and the trial will be in Dobson courthouse. A separate whisky find of 15 gallons of white lightning was reported near Crooked Oak Church with no owner identified.
Nine senior Civil Air Patrol members from Mount Airy depart September 2 for two day SAR CAP maneuvers at Seymour Johnson Field Goldsboro NC. Capt Carl L Thomas commands with 70 aircraft and 875 flight hours planned across 82 areas covering 1947 square miles.
A schedule update moves the Old Belt tobacco markets including Mount Airy warehouses to Thursday September 14, delaying from September 11 due to a late crop in the Southern belts.
Haynes Coal & Oil Co. expands to South Street near Badgett Concrete Works with a 30 000 gallon fuel oil tank installation. Lester Y Haynes owner and manager says the main office stays on West Pine Street and trucks haul only fuel oil to avoid gasoline mix ups. The firm will also handle coal and Iron Fireman heating equipment.
Forty two jurors were chosen to serve at Surry County Superior Court in Dobson beginning September 18 for a one week criminal term. Presiding judge Zeb V Nettles will oversee jurors from Mount Airy Elkin Dobson Ararat State Road Pilot Mountain and other areas.
Dr. Ira Samuel Gambill, almost 64, longtime Elkin physician, died unexpectedly Saturday of a heart attack at his home. He retired about three years ago and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery. Surviving is his foster daughter Thelma Gambill.
A raid by SBI and state patrol captured 19 cases of whisky. Mrs. Pete Dillon injured in a wreck Sunday evening after a mountain ride. Dillon and driver Tony Rector were involved. Rector fled with another passenger. Luther Nelson, 47, arrested for aiding hit and run. Rector sought transport to Danville. damage to Dillon car around $500.
The North Carolina Highway Commission announced a new road project in Surry County to let on August 29. Three miles of hard surface will connect Westfield to Banner Town area near Indian Graves, with 1.5 mile segments in both directions from the NC 89 starting point. The plan is funded by the $200 million bond program and accompanies 29 other road jobs statewide. Highway Chairman Henry W. Jordan said 1950 could be North Carolina’s greatest year of roadbuilding with roughly 20 percent of the program completed by July 1 and about 500 projects in progress.
Susan Fleming Chappell 95, the county's oldest woman, died Wednesday at 8 30 a m at her daughter’s home in Cana. Born June 7 1855 in Carroll County she leaves 182 descendants including 29 grandchildren 34 great grandchildren and 63 great great grandchildren. Survivors include five daughters and a son. Funeral at Mount Bethel Moravian Church Friday at 2 30 p m with viewing one hour prior. Burial plans at Ararat home.
Mrs Bill Campbell and her children Nan and Bill are spending two weeks with her parents in Greer South Carolina.
A Mount Airy delegation from Army Reserve Unit 426 visited Washington to seek details on Granite City men called to active duty. In the Pentagon they met various officers but returned with no clear guidance on unit leadership or operations as active duty for September 6 looms. A reserve meeting announced Thursday night physicals with Winston Salem doctors and local medical staff for examinations.
The Rotary Club of Mount Airy hosts the Farmer's Day Jubilee beauty contest at the Green Room Blue Ridge Hotel September seventh with eleven floats promised and four prize categories including a plaque from Leonard's Jewelers and cosmetic set from Lamm's Drug Store. Contestants parade in ten convertibles with chaperons and new entrants announced from Dobson High Beulah High White Plains High and others.
The Rockford Street Methodist Church marks 25 years since the building was occupied under Rev. G. W. Williams. Rev. Mr. Williams will preach at the 11 o clock service, followed by a church grounds picnic dinner open to members and friends with baskets.
Mount Airy High School band members must attend Monday night rehearsal to prepare for the upcoming Farmer's Day Parade and football season. The meeting is urgent for all members to participate.
Ralph Montgomery of Pilot Mountain, a local technician for the Surry County Cooperative Artificial Breeding Association, attended the First Annual Technicians' Conference in Asheville on August 11 and 12, sponsored by the Southeastern Artificial Association.
SBS officers with Highway Patrol seized 19 cases of whisky valued at $1,200 from Clarence Ayers at the edge of Granite City two miles north of Mount Airy. Ayers faced prohibition charges after the 10 am raid. bond set at $1,500. Local deputies were unavailable at the scene.
The Boys and Girls Fishing Rodeo is set for Saturday afternoon August 26 at Dry Lake on Highway 52. Registration opens at 12 30 p m with fishing from 1 to 4 p m. Contestants must bring their own gear. prizes from Better Fishing Inc and Western Auto Store along with other sponsors. Refreshments by Surry Dairies will follow awards.
Mr and Mrs Buck White and son Tommy spent the week end at their Mitchell Street home. Mr White works on the tobacco market in Fairmont and was mentioned in local business circles.
