City builds 500000 gallon water tank atop Rockford Street
Work on the Rockford Street elevated water tank began about two months ago and is near completion within two weeks. The 120 foot structure will hold 500000 gallons, cost 70000 dollars under contract to R B Ford and Company Newman Ga, and will be painted alumnium after three more coats. It will surpass the town two existing tanks in capacity and connect to the main water system.

Polio Outbreak Adds Two New Victims in Surry County
Two new polio cases reported to the Surry County Health Department raise total victims to 29. Virginia Ann Brinkley, 21 months, of Toast, was taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem last Wednesday, and Robert Wayne Beck, 4 months, of Mount Airy Route 1, Buck Shoals Road, was admitted to a Greensboro hospital. Officials doubt lifting the under 16 ban before September 1 or later, and Mount Airy schools may open September 9 only if restrictions are lifted.

Soldier Arrested For 18 Months AWOL On Banner Town Farm
Willie Gunnell 23 a tenant farmer on the Jackson farm in Banner Town was arrested Tuesday night for being absent without leave from the United States Army for 18 months. Constable Raymond Hanks captured him at a barn carrying tobacco and the prisoner offered no resistance. Gunnell left on January 6, 1947 after a leave and did not report back to his army camp in New Jersey. He had married and fathered a seven month old child since then. He served in World War II in Japan and reenlisted for 18 months after a promise of return to the States. The military officer said Gunnell served all required time before desertion.

Bill Whitaker Started Business By Selling Peck Of Apples In 38

With a wife and two children he bought a peck of apples for wholesale and sold them at five cents each, earning enough to buy a bushel.
