The Moulton Eagle reports thirteen new subscribers last week and asks who’s next. Texas faces Labor Day deaths with over 500, including 42 in the state. The draft calls total 170,000. legislature will add five new senators and 58 representatives.
President Truman’s attempts to curb General MacArthur sparked repercussions as the generals Chicago VFW address was not read aloud yet the public still learned the content. MacArthur has spent years in the Far East and reports a deep understanding of the volatile situation there.
Frank Machart aged 90 of Moulton died August 29 after a brief illness at Dr Hugo Strieder Hospital. Funeral services were held August 31 at St Josephs Church with burial in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Anna and three sons, five daughters, 34 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. He was born in Czechoslovakia October 27 1860 and came to Texas in 1885.
Victor Krejci participated in a Safety Education Workshop at the University of Texas this summer. The program, sponsored by the Texas Safety Association in cooperation with state agencies, produced materials to be printed for use in the School Safety Education program.
T Sgt James H. Robinson the first local casualty in the Korean conflict was seriously injured August 13 after his unit was committed to combat. A veteran of the 23rd Infantry Second Division he is survived by his wife and two children who had just returned from Fort Lewis Washington prior to his overseas departure.
Mrs Weldon Knape who underwent surgery at Johns Hospital in Taylor Texas was released Saturday and is resting at her sister Mrs I G Janac in Round Rock Texas. Weldon Knape accompanied her and she expects to return home in about ten days.
The Evergreen School at Henkhaus will begin the 1950-51 term on Monday September 18 with Mrs Edgar Guettamer serving as principal.
Mrs. Frank Mikulik returns to New Orleans after several weeks with her father Grandpa Frank Bohuskiv and other relatives. She was born and reared here but has lived in New Orleans for the last thirty years.
James B. Pyland of the United States Navy stationed in Memphis spent several days this week visiting his parents Superintendent and Mrs J W Pyland.
Lavaca county delegates Mrs. George Rektorik and Mrs. Chas Cho vanetz attended the Texas Home Demonstration Convention in Big Springs from August 23 to 25. The three day event featured assemblies workshops officer elections and year end reports with the theme Better Homes Make For a Better World. Dr. L D Haskew UT College of Education delivered a masterly address on forming better home habits. Social events included a western barbecue a ballroom reception and an installation service for 700 delegates and visitors. A and M College invited the THDA to meet at College Station next year for their silver anniversary.
Mrs. Paul F. Gips, aged 70, was laid to rest in Yorktown on Monday afternoon with attendees including Mr. and Mrs. Pren Lockwell, Mrs. Jimmie Few, Mrs. Haskell Morrow, and Mrs. J. W. Miller of Moulton and Waelder.
Texas education officials report most one room schools have disappeared since 1920 through new construction and modernization. About 1 200 one teacher schools remain, seen as important but the state moves toward standardized, healthier classroom environments with temperature control to reduce illnesses and improve attendance.
Physical examinations were held in San Antonio this week for Paul Hornshu Oscar Anton Hirsch Eugene Spaniel Herbert Emil Laas and Marvin Lee Oeltjen of Moulton. Seventeen men from Lavaca and Gonzales counties are set to depart for induction into the armed forces on September 27.
Mrs. Louise Helweg is working on her eighty first quilt most of the previous eighty have been given away as gifts.
Members and interested parties are invited to White's Live Oak Center on Sunday September 10. Arrive about 11 for a basket lunch at noon, with lodge meeting at 2 PM. Afternoon includes games and refreshments.
The Firemen's Dance held Sunday night at the V. F. W. Hall drew a large attendance and much enjoyment. Henry Brosch orchestra supplied the music for the event.
The Oak Grove School begins Monday September 11 with Victor Dull ye as principal and Mrs. Lucille Dullye serving as assistant teacher.
Representative Thompson reports a pending Senate Agricultural Committee review of a cotton acreage allotment bill for 1951 and following years. The House passed the measure. hearings occurred in a Senate subcommittee but no action has been taken. The plan includes reserved allotments for new farms and abnormal conditions and ties future fractions to 1950 51 and 52 averages.
Dimmitt Perkins, operator of the intertype at The Eagle office this summer, returned to San Antonio Monday. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Knape, and he graduated from Brackenridge High School last May before entering college next week.
The Czech Dramatic Club of Moulton will present a Czech language play at the parish hall on Sunday September 10. Net proceeds from the performance go to buy a bus for St. Joseph's School.
A Lake Jackson family suffered a fatal crash on Highway 6 near Waller at 5 30 P M Sunday. Mrs Jesse L Wilson Jr 33 was killed instantly. Her husband Jesse L Wilson Jr 37 was in critical condition along with their two sons Joe Bob 6 and Sam 240 who were injured. Joe Bob had a head injury and Sam a fractured leg. Jesse L Wilson Jr received head and chest injuries. He is a half brother to Mrs J W Pyland of Moulton.
Mrs. August Hohensee of Moulton died August 29 after a brief illness at age 81. The funeral was at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Rev. John Matocha officiating. She leaves seven sons, four daughters, 26 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a half sister in Germany.
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Brom of Moulton welcome a daughter born at Shiner Hospital on Friday September 1 at 7 00 PM. The baby weighed 6 pounds 8 ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Albert Brom of Moulton and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kubecka of Shiner.
Mrs. W. K. Richter reports her red hibiscus bush began blooming on April 13 and has produced 926 blossoms by September 4. She also notes two rose bushes over 49 years old remain in bloom.
Harvey Trojacek son of Mr and Mrs Joe Trojacek of Flatonia and Freddia Perry daughter of Mr and Mrs Perry of Waco were married Wednesday evening August 30 in Richmond Texas. A reception followed at the groom's brother in law and sister's home in Houston. They will live in Houston where both work.
The Catholic congregation of Moulter prepares for the annual church picnic at the VFW Hall on Sunday Sept 17. Dinner and supper will be served with entertainment for all. The Henry Brosch Orchestra provides music day and night.
Miss Anita Richter returns from Ames Iowa where she attended Iowa State College and reports cool weather. She visited Fort Worth and Lubbock hosts on the way home and will resume her duties as head of the Home Economics Department at Texas Lutheran College Seguin.
Mr and Mrs Harold Knape move back to Yoakum where he serves as an industrial arts teacher in the public school faculty now in his third year. They reside on Wimberly Street.
The world highest peak Mount Everest is reported to have grown by 198 feet following a recent earthquake in India. The change in height is being studied by geologists, with scientists noting tectonic shifts and regional seismic activity.
Roman E. Hanak ENC U S Navy Recruiter in Charge of the Victoria Texas Navy Recruiting Station will be in Moulton Texas Friday September 8 1950 from 9 AM to 12 Noon. The Navy seeks volunteers ages 17 to 31 with relaxed physical requirements for this drive. Those with draft board pre induction notices cannot enlist. Ex Navy ratings Seaman or higher with dependents are now eligible to reenlist. Headquarters will be at the Post Office. contact via Victoria Recruiting Station or 22 Post Office Building Victoria Texas.
The first Lavaca County war casualty was reported last week. The War Department announced Marine Alfred J. Benes was wounded in action in Korea. He is the son of Mrs. Eva R. Benes of Shimer.
