Pvt Milton J Chumchal joins the 28th Infantry Division in Germany as NATO forces train in western Europe. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Joe Chumchal of Shiner Texas. He entered the Army last April and completed basic training at Fort Bliss Texas before arriving overseas.
Joe Kubenka Jr Marvin Haase and Victor Jungbauer of Joes Chevrolet Sales returned from Houston where they attended a private preview and business session for the 1954 Chevrolet truck line. The event showcased many new features and an expanded advertising program ahead of the trucks’ regional display later this month.
Chamber of Commerce members approve a 300 dollar donation to the New Fire Truck Fund as the group plans a 10 000 dollar fire apparatus purchase. Extension of Highway 95 is urged with other towns expected to back the move.
Allen J. Korenek 23 died from asphyxiation in a leaking gas heater incident at an Austin motel. His wife Nadа 20 was found unconscious and later hospitalised. she remained unconscious but is expected to recover. The couple, married Tuesday, had left on their wedding trip and were discovered after the room was opened by a motel attendant. He is survived by his widow, parents, four sisters and three brothers. funeral services were held in Nada at St. Mary's Church.

Robkatz maintain first place with a perfect record as the A team won 42 to 37 against St. Josephs of Yoakum while the B team led 44 to 24. The Fayetteville trip saw the A game win 46 to 35 but the B string lose 30 to 26. A trip to Rock Island produced a close A game 43 to 37 for Robkatz and a 42 to 31 B string victory in an exciting season highlight.
Austin reports a seasonal surge as migrating ducks breach thirteen state hatcheries this fall. Diving ducks bore into pond bottoms and walls causing seepage while shore birds and black bass are also noted. Geese appear briefly but pose less disruption.
La Grange man La Grange Zacharias was beaten robbed and his car burned after picking up two men traveling from Houston toward San Antonio. The pair fled between Weimar and Schulenburg. early Friday the car was found burned atop Bluff Road. Robert Kallus reported a beaten man at Hostyn. motorists warned to avoid hitching with strangers.
Culak Lodge picnic was rained out on Sunday November 8 and moved to Sunday November 29. The event at the Lodge Hall three miles out on the Gonzales FM Road features barbecue and stew and marks the Lodge’s third anniversary with an afternoon picnic and supper.
About 1 am Sunday burglars struck five Shiner businesses breaking plate glass and entering. The FBI aided local police after the Post Office and First National Bank were hit but only minor thefts occurred. a 1949 Ford Tudor was stolen from the Motor Boehm lot and found later nearby. three colored men were questioned in Hallettsville.
The University of Texas South Central Texas Club hosts a Thanksgiving dance on November 28 at Recreation Hall in Hallettsville to raise funds for its scholarship. Van Kirkpatrick Orchestra of Austin provides music. This year two freshmen Milton Meier and Geraldine Ehrig received scholarships as the club supports students from Fayete Lavaca Gonzales DeWitt and Colorado counties.
Reverend K. Windecker, longtime pastor serving the community, left Moulton on Wednesday November 18 to reside in Hondo where he will continue to lead a church. A farewell supper was held at the Lutheran Educational Building Monday evening with many friends offering best wishes. More details will appear next week.
O F Knape 77 former Moulton Eagle publisher died at Nix Hospital San Antonio after six weeks bedridden Services held at Smith Funeral Home with the Moulton Community Band performing What a Friend We Have In Jesus and In the Sweet By and By He was a musician a former school board and fire department president and head of the Lions Club He leaves a widow nine children and ten grandchildren with tributes from state officials and friends.
A group of farmers visited the DeKalb Georgetown hatchery on Tuesday November 10 to hear talks on hybrid hens foundation flocks and other chicken industry developments. They enjoyed barbecue and showed films on the grounds with participants including Edwin Fuchik Ed Zatopek Edw Pilsner Marvin Claus Hy Olsovsky Eloise Pustka Jr Walter Hilderbrandt Hugo Albrecht Chas Halata Pete Machart John Wagner Daniel Brom Joe Pavlas and Frank Hanslik.
St James Catholic church building committee and trustees announce a new rectory in Gonzales to replace the 1885 structure. Builders Supply Co of Gonzales awarded the contract at 19012 dollars. Construction to begin before year’s end on the same site, preserving the location of the old rectory built by Rev. F J Goesche.
A Lavaca District farmer reports net $29.15 more per acre from clover cover crop. Wenske cites 150 lb lint cotton gains, with costs for legume seed fertilizer land prep planting and destruction totaling $15.10 per acre. Benefits noted include root rot control winter ground cover and soil protection.
Luther Leaguers from 13 leagues gathered in Victoria on Sunday November 8 at First English Ev Lutheran Church for a Fall Rally with about 150 attendees including Texas Lutheran College students. They heard Devotions by Rev J C Felger and Vicar J D O Donnell on The True Faith. Federation President Dolores Mueller led the business session and reports. The event featured a banquet, skit by Byron Bureh, instrumental music, and a closing choral tribute Faith of Our Fathers. University of Texas Bureau of Business Research reports September farm income in Texas fell 20 percent from a year earlier with livestock products 18 percent lower. Dairy and poultry gains offset losses in meat sales and wool. January to September 1953 income totaled 1.1335 billion dollars, down 249.7 million from 1952.
The Farm Bureau will hold its next regular meeting at the VFW Hall on Tuesday November 24 with free doughnuts and coffee for members and families. The gathering marks the bureau’s second anniversary. Herman Hanslik is president and Johnnie Dieke secretary treasurer.
