Roosevelt and football safety spurred gear innovation
Theodore Roosevelt briefly threatened to ban football in 1905 after viewing a Penn Swarthmore game marked by mayhem. His push for safer play boosted protective equipment, with pads common since the 1890s and helmets evolving thanks to leaders like Whitley and Rawlings. Also noted are social visits by Mr and Mrs Kristynik to Moravia, dining with the Olsovskys.
