The city, via the Moulton Chamber of Commerce, has arranged two extra blocks of parking along Front Street from Ed's Appliance Company to Haas Furniture Store. The new spaces aim to relieve the business district parking problem for some time.
Local paper notes Easter Seals appeal for handicapped lives and welcomes students and visitors to the district meet. It reports state agriculture commissioner J E McDonald seeking an eleventh term, Alaska statehood bill passage, and possible Hawaii statehood pending senate approval. Shivers to speak at VFW event April 9. Alamo anniversary observed March 6 with San Jacinto victory recalled.
Geier Merrem Post American Legion held its regular meeting at the V F W Hall. The rifle committee reported 11 rifles were sold to veterans and a vote was taken to hold the annual memorial services Sunday May 21. Delegates to the district convention in Bellville will be named next meeting. World War II veterans may enroll in Baldwin Business College night classes April 1 to July 25. A motion was made to show films at a future meeting.
The Moulton Chamber of Commerce votes to observe Good Friday April 7 noon to end of day Easter Monday April 10 Independence Day July 4 Armistice Day November 11 Thanksgiving November 23 Christmas December 25 and New Year’s Day January 1 1951. Cards with details will be distributed to businesses soon.
Mr and Mrs Elo C Fehren kamp and Mr and Mrs Robert F Harris attended the First District Texas Bankers Association meeting in Houston on Thursday March 2 A banquet was held at the Rice Hotel with about one thousand bankers in attendance and an entertaining program.
The Moulton high school principal announced the 1950 Opportunity Awards scholarship competition of Texas A and M College. Four year scholarships worth 200 to 400 dollars per year help outstanding boys who need financial aid to pursue college education.
Governor Allan Shivers will appear in Moulton on Easter Sunday April 9 for the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars celebration. The official party will depart Austin for a luncheon and thousands are expected from across Texas. Local civic clubs urge full cooperation to welcome the chief executive and other officials including Bascom Giles and Esse James.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the B. J. Hersik store in Praha about six miles southeast of Moulton on Thursday night March 2. Damage was estimated at 35000 to 40000 dollars as Shin er Scuulenburg Flatonia and Moulton units fought the blaze and saved nearby buildings. The landmark housed a mercantile and grocery, dancehall, garage and poultry business. Two thousand five hundred chickens were freed from the flames.
Mr E T Merrem of LaGrange celebrated his 90th birthday at the Schulz home in Swiss Alp on Sunday March 5. Attending were his children grandchildren and great grandchildren from Rosenberg West Columbia LaGrange Moulton Booth Guy El Campo Alvin Galveston and Schulz relatives.
Voters in Moulton will go to the polls on Tuesday April 4 to elect three aldermen for two year terms. Eligible residents are urged to participate in the local government election.
Poultry producers and families are invited to meetings at Moulton High School Gymnasium on Tuesday March 14 at 8 45 pm and Oak Grove Schoolhouse on Wednesday March 15 at 8 15 pm. Programs cover government support, 1950 poultry outlook, management feeding sanitation and disease control with a Q and A period and attendance prizes.
Evergreen PTC reports 103 paid members in its history since 1929. The group plans shows of Aunt Jeru shy on the Warpath at Evergreen school house March 18 and 19 with the Moulton Music Masters providing music. Pupils toured the Houston Fat Stock Show and met Roy Rogers, later visiting Monument Hill at LaGrange and Fayetteville’s Freis collection of Indian relics valued in the thousands.
Moulton CYO won the basketball tournament for the American Heart Association, defeating Gonzales 62 to 30 in the finals. Teams included Gonzales, Flatonia, Weimar, La Grange, Shiner, Hallettsville, Yoakum, and Moulton. The Moulton squad played fourteen games, with twelve wins and two losses.
Miss Margaret Schneider and Walter Seifert were married Tuesday morning February 21 at St Anthony's Church Range with Rev. Wm Hoffman officiating. The bride, a Runge drugstore employee, wore a gray suit and white carnation corsage. Attendants Milton Schneider and Allen Seifert. They plan a farm home near Shiner after a Texas honeymoon.
Norman Novosad sustained a fracture of his right leg below the knee while helping Louis Pietsch move a rope from a cow. The accident occurred Tuesday of last week and he remains confined at Shiner Hospital. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Jim Novosad of Moulton.
The University Interscholastic League meet begins Friday at 9:00 AM in Moulton. Events include boys playground ball and girls volleyball, with high school and grade school girls volleyball in the gymnasium. Boys baseball on Lions Club Field and grade school boys on the school campus. Friday's 5:00 PM high school boys volleyball tournament opens. Schools: Waelder Schulenburg Weimar Hallettsville Shiner Breslau and Moulton.
Twenty one members and four guests attended the Moulton Lions Club dinner last week. E A Oehl presided in the president’s absence and read a thank you letter from George Kallus, county infantile paralysis fund drive chairman. The club voted to join VFW and American Legion posts in the Easter egg hunt at the VFW Hall and will appoint a committee to assist with town decorations.
The Moulton Knights of Columbus gathered at St. Joseph's Church for a mass led by Father Patrick O'Brien of San Antonio who also delivered the sermon. Afterward a parish hall breakfast was served. Austin official Fred Kinane spoke as a guest. The afternoon featured a Knights of Columbus day of recollection. Over one hundred members attended.
The city office reports 216 voters of Moulton paid their poll tax in 1949, compared with 213 in 1948.
Charles Welff is busy taking the scholastic census for the Moulton Independent School District. The census must be completed during the month of March.
