Farmers League Opposes Tax Proposals and Seeks Reforms

The Farmers League of Texas concluded its convention in Jourdanton urging repeal of the sales tax and opposing Governor O Daniel's tax plan. Delegates from eight counties pressed for soil conservation drainage in coastal counties, cotton bagging use, and seed packaging in cotton bags. They also urged league chartering, women’s enrollment, fair FSA grant distribution, correction of freight rates, and tax payments by federal and state employees. A telegram to Secretary Wallace and Texas senators urged support for the Bankhead voluntary reduction amendment, noting 80 000 members and the need for early action before planting time.

Pope Pius XI Entombed After Death in Rome

Pope Pius XI died in Rome on Friday February 10 at 5 31 A M in his eighty second year. He was entombed Tuesday at St Peter s crypt in a ceremony for about 8000 mourners. Over 600000 people viewed the pontiff s bier as condolence messages arrived from many nations. A successor would be elected within two weeks.
