Consumer Tax Help: Do It Yourself or Use Preparers
The Texas Consumer Protection Division warns that most people can file their own returns, but others may need help. A California study showed commercial preparers often produced incomplete or inaccurate returns, potentially costing taxpayers money. If earnings are under 20000 from wages or similar, self filing is usually feasible with IRS aid. The IRS Publication 17 is free, and taxpayers can request advice or have the IRS compute and file using a short form by April 15.
