A large crowd attended the annual mask ball last Saturday evening. Unmasking at 9:30 p.m. awarded prizes to Emma Reindl of the United States, Rosie Gast the fencing girl, Tillie Zimmermann for domino, Bill Mikulenko as king of spades, and Annie Schacherl with sunflowers. Judges were Mrs. Frank Wagner, Annie Stankey, and Willie Brosch. Dancing resumed with all in attendance enjoying the event.
Emil Grunwald Felix Paylas and son Joe went to the county capital last Wednesday on business. Corporal Edgar K Merrem returned to Camp Travis Saturday after five days with family. Grunwald Schindler Anderle and Jos Anderle made an overland trip to Victoria last Thursday. Siems and Mr and Mrs Wick of Shiner visited Frank Dierschke’s family. Johnnie Dierschke, son of Frank and wife, was ill with pneumonia but is recovering. Eddy January 29 1917.

The Moulto Lutheran Frauen Verein enjoyed a pleasant afternoon with Mrs. John C. Mueller last Thursday. Mrs. Charles O. Riske joined as a new member. The next meeting is planned with Mrs. Leo Jaroszewski on Thursday February 14.
The Bohemian Auxiliary of the American Red Cross met at the opera house on Sunday afternoon. Sixty new members joined, raising total membership to 361.
Harry Wilson, editor of the Greenville Banner, starts a goose ranch linked to his newspaper work. With eggs at five cents each, a chicken ranch is under consideration to boost earnings and help “scratching” for a living.
President Wilson issues a proclamation urging Monday and Wednesday as wheatless days each week and one wheatless meal daily. Tuesday should be meatless with one meatless meal daily. Tuesday and Saturday are porkless days weekly to support the war effort.
Representative Tinkham urges mass production of ocean tonnage and increased air power, while Italy aid and supplies to American bases in France are prioritized. The Senate may reject woman suffrage. Texas urged to seek it locally. Public Buildings Committee limits new wartime construction. Rivers and Harbors to fund only essential projects to protect existing ones.
Citizens are urged to share practical farming improvements and successes. The Farm and Ranch call invites farmers and homemakers to report how they save labor, diversify, rotate crops, and educate while contributing to better farming and citizenship.
Adjutant General J R Harley and Henry S Paulus of Yoakum were admitted to the Supreme Court bar with J W Bailey presenting them. Paulus plans to return home with gained knowledge. Henry of Waco and Louis J Wortham of Fort Worth are in Washington this week.
Mrs Werner J Cordes hosted the Forty Two Club on Thursday January 10. Mrs Frank J Guenther won the pin. Attendees included Mesdames Jon Brunkenhoefer Elo Fehrenkamp Charles Rupple Fred Krause John Bucek Frank J Guenther Henry A Menefee Ed Pundt Oscar Lee Bunting Elizabeth Quebedeaux and Miss Ivura Valenta Ida Rehmet.
Lorbeeren lodge No. 63 O D H S installed officers for the coming year. Mrs. Mathilde Etlinger was named president, Mrs. Emma Lueke vice president, Mrs. GJ Bohnenkamp secretary, Miss Ida Lueke treasurer, Mrs. Minnie Hillmer trustee, Mrs. Alma Krueger finance committee, Mrs. Emilie Henrichs inner guard, and L A Meiners deputy.
Mrs Paul Dierschke died after a two week illness on January 24 near Moulton. Funeral in Catholic Cemetery officiated by Rev Neubert. Born Maikoeter in Freisburg on March 28 1884 she was 33 years 9 months and 26 days old. Married 1902 to Paul Dierschke they had eight children oldest 14 youngest six weeks. Community expresses sympathy.
Miss Lillie Etlinger celebrated her birthday with a surprise party on Wednesday evening January 23. Friends and family attended including Mr Joe Istlinger and family, Miss Bertha Papacek, Clara Brosch, Rose and Mary Gast, Helen Etlinger, Margaret Etlinger, Edwin Rehmer, Henry Hoyer, Joe Chlastak, Dick, Fritz and Henry Janssen, Anton, John and Joe Raab, August USC, and Victor Freytag.
John M. Krueger died at his Shiner home after a month of illness. He was Shiner’s first postmaster and a longtime resident. Survived by two sons Morris of Fort Worth and Tell of Houston and four daughters Adela Edith Millie Helia of Moulton, the family received tribute from the community. The Eagle extends sympathy to the family as local notices and visits are reported from nearby towns.
Last Saturday night a fine little soldier boy visited Joe J. Horak and family. On Sunday another soldier arrived at Jos A Heinrich and family. John Darilek and others traveled to LaGrange on business. Emil Grunwald and others went to Victoria and returned. Miss Alva Timm, after roseola, left Hallettsville. pupils are sick and many take holiday. Principal A J Elster continues teaching as sick students recover and are readmitted. Officers include Gus Huff as president F Heerssen as vice president G J Bohnenkamp as secretary Hermann Thar as treasurer W H Schodde as trustee Hmil Grunwald as escort John Anderle as inner guard Jim Hoepfl as outer guard William Kilert as sick committee.
The Lavaca County Chapter A. R. C. school committee extends notice of a meeting at the county superintendent office in Hallettsville on Saturday February 2 at 8 oclock p m. The session will address Junior Red Cross work in county schools. Chairman T. J. Ponton signs the notice.
Dr John G Guenther a noted physician here was appointed first lieutenant surgeon in the U S Army last August He left for San Antonio to begin duties after a brief post graduate course at Tulane in New Orleans ten days earlier.
Miss Laura Valenta returned Tuesday from a visit with Shiner relatives and friends.
